Hey everyone! I'm going to the Bavarian Lodge tonight in Lisle, IL. Looking forward to some good German food and beer. They have a pretty extensive beer list including lots of German and Belgian beers but unfortunately I'm not too familiar with a lot of those styles. I've had Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock as well as St. Bernardus Abt 12 and Rochefort 10 but was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for other German or Belgian beers/styles I should try? Thanks all!

I checked their menu, i'd go for a weihenstephaner hefeweizen and the hunter's schnitzel, or the schwein's hax'n (extra crispy). Maybe a duck wing appetizer. Then a Aecht Schlenkerla Helles. Whatever you do, get full and have fun

That's in the next town over from me! Now that I'm legal I should go back...

Anyway, looking at their beer list, the ones that stick out are the two Weihenstephaner's (Vy-hen-stef-an-er) and the Schneider Aventinus. Weihenstephaner hefeweiss and the Aventinus are my two favorite German beers, period (don't ask me to choose one). Krombacher, Pilsner Urquell, and Praga are other popular, but not hard to find, choices.

As for Belgians, Gulden Draak, Bosteels Pawel Kwak, and Rodenbach Grand Cru are solid choices. You can find them commonly in stores but not as often on draft. Also, if you are going with people who like to poke fun at craft beer, expect to receive some jabs if you order Pawel Kwak, the traditional glass it's served in is... elaborate. De Glazen Toren Saison is also a good one.

I think the only mistake you could make here is ordering a bottle of something. This is an awesome draft list and should be taken advantage of.

This is my favorite place to go in the 'burbs. I don't think you can go wrong on the draft list, either, if anything consider ordering Kwak since you'll discover it's such a unique drinking experience from a glassware perspective (look it up and you'll know what I mean). What I would do? Pick a couple of possibles that you think you may want to try and look them up on BA for additional reference. Ask the bartenders as well since they tend to be fairly knowledgeable staff. They also should have a couple of beer specials so look for those as well once you sit down and are settled. Get yourself a combo platter, too!

If I'm eating at BL, I have to get my absolute favorite beer-food pairing ever:
Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier with the smoked Thuringer sandwich.

Trust me on this one, you won't regret it.

Just order whatever. Everything there is awesome. My profile pic is taken at the Bavarian Lodge.
