Posted in the Germany Beer forums but relevant here. https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/german-beers-in-columbus-oh.632267/
It appears that your thread in the Germany forum got moved here, which is probably the best place for it anyway.
Gemüt is your best bet as far as styles/selection. Nothing outstanding there, but almost all of them are solid examples. Most of Wolf’s Ridge lagers are really good. I think their Rauchbier and Doppelbock are the better ones. For me, the Hofbrauhaus beers just aren’t the same as the imported bottles. I see that you are going north through central OH so I would definitely swing by Wooly Pig. https://www.woolypigfarmbrewery.com/ They make nothing but lagers (should have their Gose on then as well) that are specifically northern Bavaria styles. Between them and Fat Heads for the best made lagers in Ohio for me. Their Schwarzbier is still the best I’ve had. Don’t forget to check on Columbus Brewing before you leave town though. Summerteeth (Kellerbier) will be out and was fantastic last year, and they usually have another one or two on tap since they opened the taproom.
Fat Heads looks like the real deal just referencing their guest biers on-tap. I'm going to meet-up there with a former work associate at the Canton location. And Wooly Pig might be a swing by stop.
You are probably taking 70 over to 77 then so wouldn’t be much of a detour. It’s only a little more than 10 minutes west off of 77. They have food trucks on the weekends, and a local pizza place will deliver there, but you can take anything in you want. There is a nice market (McKenna’s) on the 4 lane just before you get there and they make great subs.
Close! We will be actually staying with friends near Kent so would drive down one afternoon for lunch and brews. Thanks for the tips! That is on the second routing through Columbus, the first is more northwesterly up to the tip of Michigan and into Canada...
101 Bottles of Beer in Kent is the #1 spot to stop there. Great draft list (though not likely to have much German stuff usually) and it's also one of the best bottle shops in NE Ohio. It's also maybe 4-5min from Mad Cap if you wind up there.
