    What do you consider low?

Helles and Dunkel are not too high, but higher than the Weizens.

I had a Berliner Weisse at Strassenbräu (in Berlin) that had 0 IBUs. Does that count

What did it taste like? I have always wondered what beer would be like with no hops or other such flavors at all?

Yes, after looking up what these types are I have actually had a couple but didn't know what they were at the time. I liked them and they weren't very bitter so now I have the names of the types and I can find them again. Otherwise it would have been a guessing game trying to figure out the few beers I have liked over the past decade but do not know the names or types of. Kolsch in particular I remember liking years ago but never would have remembered that that is what it is called until I read that here and then read up on it and saw the type I had.

EDIT: also just remembered I had a dunkelweizen a long time ago and it was very good. Again not a word I would have remembered without seeing it again set aside as a lower IBU beer. Seeing these beer types along with the sea of other beer types and zero info on what types have high or low IBU makes it difficult to figure out.

german sour beers as well-berliner weisse,gose,lichtenhainer...
    Kölsch should be over 20...
A lot of Helles and Dunkles are over 20 as well.

The perceived bitterness in a Dunkel should be low. Ones from Franconia will have more hops.

Munich Helles will be on the low side, the ones from Franconia will be higher. Augustiner at the Keller, well I had to really search for any Hop character to bitterness.

Aren't those lagers like Beck's Gold essentially very under-hopped pilsners? I made a mental comparison to Jupiler the one time I had one.
They wouldn't have weizen/Berliner/Gose level IBUs, but they'd be lower than most other beers.

It was very good, nicely tart. Enough malt flavor that you knew it wasn't lemonade

And a lot of Dunkles and Helles is brewed in Franconia....... At least a lot of different examples.
Are they even still around and relevant?? A lot of those "gold/mild" beers retired a year or two after their introduction...

I had dolo once in western africa, a local beer style also without any hops. But that was not the weirdest part of it......By far the most unique beer experience I ever had:wink:

The last German beer I had with the word “gold” in the brand was Flensburger Gold. I had this beer a year or so ago. To the best of my knowledge this beer is still being produced. I have no idea what the measured IBUs are for this beer.

    Cheers!

From my perspective, there were two "boom periods"...the "gold rush" after Beck's Gold was introduced in the early 2000s ,with a lot of copycats (Krombacher Extramild, Bit Sun, Flensburger Gold and tons of regional, lesser known copies) and in more recent years, some breweries like Krombacher make a "Hell" again...to me it seems more like marketing than anything else. And...it's been a while since I've seen Gold beers "in the wild".

I used to enjoy a Becks Gold from time to time, Flensburger Gold is pretty forgettable though.
