    Indeed, but today's growler evolved from "lunch pails," actually buckets, that factory workers used for carrying lunch to work and getting filled with beer in the local tavern at lunch break and on their ways home from work at night.

    Maybe not as informal today as it was in the late 19th/early 20th century, but the result is the same.
