One time I dropped 4 ounces of extra light DME in cold water and stirred it with a cappuccino frother. It was miserable. I should have applied for a patent.

Good luck to those industrious German brewers though!

Honestly, this seems to answer a brewery problem, not a beer drinker problem. Hard pass.

    Cheers

You basically made Malta with your DME and water. And I agree, its terrible. I lived in the Caribbean for a few years at Vitamalt was a widely consumed beverage.

For places where you can't bring in outside alcohol like football games where they charge a lot for beer this could be useful. Just carry it in your pocket and buy a bottle of water to make all the beer you want.

This "strategy" inevitably arises on the outbound leg of every backpack trip (along with the talk of using horses). It has been shot down each time.

The official press release from the brewer is here:

    https://www.klosterbrauerei.com/shop/Bierpulver/951/951

I think the most hilarious part of this whole thing is it was German government funded (right from the PR):

After almost two years of research (funded by the BMWi), the Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle, together with technology partners, has developed a beer powder (dryest beer) that can already be marketed in small quantities in this form, but is to be tested on the market until mid-2023.

Nothing says serious like the German government getting behind beer innovation... powdered NA beer it is.

I also think it's kind of interesting that the brewery used to be a monastery and apparently they have monks living there still:

So IDK... but German beer maker, German government and German monks... I think this could happen. Looking at their BA ratings though... looks kind of middle ground ratings on the existing line.

Anyone ever have their regular line?

I have tasted Neuzeller's regular beer and let's just say I have no desire to taste it again.

I can see this as a low weight packing option for backpacking and trips to Mars perhaps (but water is still weight so nevermind), but otherwise I don’t see the benefit here as I have serious doubts it will be tasty.

I like to believe that you have a special beer library in your basement. It contains every book on beer ever written and your library has a special room loaded with archived beer newsprints dating over 100years ago. The newsprints are pressed and organized and displayed like a giant book with pages. When you feel the need to research a topic on BA, you sneak on down to the basement and enter your special room. You pull the string to the light, crack a beer and light a cigarette. Then spend hours researching and pulling relevant information from your archive to share with us all.

While living in and travelling through Germany, I always found myself drinking a lot of alcohol-free beer, especially at lunchtime (it was that or Apfelschorle). Oddly enough I don't drink any at all here in the US. I especially prefer the alcohol free hefeweizen - it's also isotonic so it makes you very sporty!

    Neuzelle's monastery brewery
Brandenburg presents non-alcoholic beer from beer powder
    Thu 23.02.23 | 18:15

Long research was done afterwards, now it is there: The monastery brewery in Neuzelle has developed the first beer powder that - mixed with water - should also taste good. This gives you a soft drink, which the brewery calls "beer-like".

Creating beer powder and water: This has now been achieved by a Brandenburger brewery. The Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle presented the world's first beer powder in the world on Thursday in Berlin. However, this beer from powder remains alcohol-free for the time being.

The development of the beer powder – also called "Dryest Beer" by the company – took two years of research, the brewery said. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics. The research project is scheduled to be completed in July 2023, after which the beer powder could be sold on the market. The powder is made from "natural products", said Braumeister Peik Schauermann to rbb. "One can call it beer-like."

    It tastes a little malty

At the presentation on Thursday, international and German journalists were able to look at and taste the beer powder and the resulting beer. Many were reasonably satisfied with the taste. "It tastes a bit malty like beer, only alcohol is missing," said Frank Groneberg of the Märkische Oder newspaper. Other testers have lacked the beer-typical bitter note, as is the case with many non-alcoholic beers.

According to the brewery, a specially brewed dextrintrin-rich beer is processed and processed into a beer powder soluble in water, according to the brewery. Dextrins are starch mining products that consist of several simple sugar molecules and can be found in beer. Before consumption, the beer powder should be mixed with carbonated water or, in exceptional cases, tap water.

    Transport costs could be reduced

"Worldwide, billions of litres of water are transported to the consumer, because beer consists of up to 90 percent water. From an environmental perspective, we are therefore already saving during transport," said Helmut Fritsche, the shareholder of the monastery brewery. By means of beer powder, one could save the transport of many drinks liters.

However, the resources and production costs are not yet saved, which is why the production process is to be further developed, so that the traditional brewing process for the beer powder is no longer necessary. In the next step, they also want to bind alcohol in the beer powder, hot from the brewery.

"We also know that the classic Pils drinkers and all craft beer enthusiasts will be sceptical about our product, especially in Germany," says Stefan Fritsche, Managing Director of Klosterbrauerei. With alcohol-free beer powder, you will be particularly aimed at transport-intensive export markets such as some countries in Asia and Africa. They also want to stamp the powder in Europe. The brewery is therefore looking for investors.
