This just in from the German Brauer Bund: German beer sales up +2.8% in Germany, +2.3% in the EU, and +41% in exports.

Thanks guys - much appreciated. When I first started out, I did tried to do quintessential German styles - pilsner, hefe, doppelbock, weizenbock and sales were tough. Firstly, there are such great examples already out there, and most importantly, during the craft boom, no one cared about unhoppy lagers. Sad but true, I know. So putting out an IPA was somewhat against the grain (no pun), but it's what people are drinking, at least in these parts of CA. That may be different for you in your area of the world, but alas hops are the focus.

A blonde ale will follow (malt forward like a helles) and then I will introduce an imperial Nutella Stout (@boddhitree will get a first batch sample) which I am still working on recipe-wise. Will keep you posted in spurts, I do not want to use this as a PR forum in any way. Wait, I just did...

I wish more brewers would brew those. I honestly love a really malty blonde ale, but it's almost like the style has become shunned. They're either associated with the early craft boom when brewers made them to appease the macro fans...or they're now called a Koelsch for no reason except that it sounds exotic. Some others are even Belgian, but the brewer didn't bother to label it as such.
A boldly malt blonde with just a little bit of English/American yeast character is something to be proud of.

Finally all that tasting I did is paying off...

Really though, that's extraordinary! Even though it's only +2.8 %, for how long have figures been declining before? 20 years? Seems like the bottom has been passed and it's slowly starting to grow again. There have been similar figures recently for breweries. Middle-sized ones are still having a very hard time, but there has been a considerable growth in newly found small breweries.
And that +41 % in exports is just what I always rant about. Many German breweries ship their best stuff overseas. The geeks are simply not enough round here.

Ah... you remind me that later, near the end of summer, I need to rebrew the Nutella Stout above.

Here's a pic of the blonde ale - I saw this woman's picture and just really liked it. It took me a while to find the right person and explain what I wanted and was intending to do, but I finally got approval to use it from the Boston Library. First couple of bottles going to them...

Thanks @Domingo I agree with you wholeheartedly. Most blonde ales I have tried are either watery or overhopped. I want a flavorful beer that tastes like beer with a pronounced pilsner malt edge. I know that @herrburgess is a big fan of this flavor profile, and I also agree that German pilsner malt is far superior to 2-row, but it is also a question of COGs. The middle is where I landed.

I avoided calling it a Kölsch because we are using an ale yeast. If you ask me, and I am sure many will agree, a Kölsch or a decent blonde ale are the hardest to brew.

    Well...

I saw an ad for this website on TV:

    http://www.bier-deluxe.de

    ...which means....

ALL OF THESE BEERS ARE NOW FERNSEHBIERE!!!!!! :grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::grimacing:

    :stuck_out_tongue:

In all seriousness this "gourmet beer" angle in Germany does break my heart just a little bit. And I don't understand their inclusion of Augustiner's Helles Lagerbier (€1,79 + shipping, no doubt). This is a beer you can literally get at any drink store in Germany for €1,15.

    CALIFORNIA ÜBER ALLES...:grinning:

I'm sitting here laughing my ass off. It reminds of Duff-Man. "This empire will last a thousand beers!"

I like to be a bit tongue in cheek (if you haven't noticed) and this seemed like the perfect phrase to bridge my German heritage and the west coast of the USA.

I have already thought about running an ad on local cable with me surfing in Lederhosen.

Are you aware that that very same picture is used on labels at http://www.beerlabelizer.com/ ?

Uh-oh… but I wonder if they got permission? Many people outside the marketing and graphics community don't understand that some vintage images are royalty free, while others have copyrights that don't allow their free usage. Since Einhorn sought out (and received) permission for use, it makes me wonder if Beer Labelizer used it under the assumption that it was royalty free.

My gnashing of teeth was done tongue in cheek. Which sounds like it could hurt now that I think about it.

Are most of your products still available or only these new offerings? I may be out your way (Santa Barbara) this summer and would like to pick a few up to sample. Thanks!
