Not trying to be mean, but I find this funny. Up to a few years ago, there was practically no such thing as a German sour beer. Even the Leipzig Gose was for export only.

    Times are changing.

What?Which Leipziger Gose was, at what point in time, for export only?
And what about Kindl Weisse and Wöllnitzer Weissbier...?

Where did you get the idea that Gose was for export only? I hung out at the Gosenschenke Ohne Bedenken in Leipzig drinking gose numerous times throughout the 1990s. Not to mention drinking Berliner Weisse throughout that time as well.

It was available at the brewery in Leipzig, but otherwise was not distributed.

Berliner Kindl was a shadow of it's former self and also only available in parts of Berlin...let's not call 2 (of the only) examples any sort of major presence.

Um no, you can and always could buy Kindl throughout germany.......at least as far as I remember.
Schultheiss Weisse was more limited in distribution when it was still around, but still far from only being aviable in and around Berlin.
And again, with Gose: What timeframes are we talking about?
I'd argue Gose in germany is on the rise at least since the 90ies, and not "only for export"..
I wouldn't call it "major presence",but I also would not say that interest in german sour beers is only a few years old and that there was nothing before that...

    Interesting story here about Gose.

I worked for Frankfurt's largest beer distributor from 1992-2004. If we sold any Berliner Kindl, I could have consumed that volume myself. No one cared about Berliner Weiss at least in our area (100 km in/around FFM), and I never saw it anywhere outside of the Neue Bundesländer. Gose was nowhere to be seen except Leipzig. After the fall of the wall, most Ossis were drinking mainstream west brands except for Radeberger. The BK brand was practically dead. In order to compensate, they tried to push Berliner Pilsner, but it took a long time to re-establish this old brand. Maybe around 2000 it was back to decent volumes, but it was not "in" to drink Berliner for many years.

I could buy Kindl at the Rewe up the street all the time in Bamberg. Stuff was everywhere back from 1993-2001.

Yeah, they brewed so much beer that they closed the Neukölln brewery in 2006.

not sure what you're saying, but the six packs truly were (and still are) everywhere.

Can confirm that I've seen Berliner Weisse in quite a few places, it's regularly on the shelves here in HH and I've seen it in Getränkemärkte and super markets down in RLP.

I don't know about Gose and exports, though. So far I only remember Sebastian Sauer formerly mostly making beers for exporting them to the U.S. - and him starting relatively recently to sell them domestically. Which I think is cool, I liked the Monarchy's Münchhausen - was my first Münster Alt.

Um.I'm confused by this discussion, honestly.Gose was, and is, mainly a regional thing, sure, so what? Wöllnitzer Weissbier even more so.
But concluding from this discussion that until a few years, Gose was mainly exported, seems weird to me. I mean, in the 90ies Gose in Leipzig was not aviable in bottles, right?So...I somehow doubt that in the 90ies large quantites of kegged Gose were exported to the US.

I won't deny interest in sour beers has increased in germany. But I would draw the timeframe bigger. It's not only "a few recent years ago",I'd go at least 15 years back that german sour beers has in certain regions become a t thing again.
Think of bayerischer Bahnhof Gose or Goslaer Gose...and yes think of Wöllnitzer Weißbier.

I bought a single bottle in Munich in 1990 at the big department store (can never remember the name) on the Marienplatz. Had to grab it because I knew what it was from Jackson's books and was surprised to see it outside of the Berlin area.

Maybe? It was down on the Southeast end of the Platz, just before you hit the Tor (IIRC).

Was 3 stories tall and I started at the top level and worked my way down to the lower level where I found the food and drink -- whoa! Jackpot.

Looking at Karstadt Munich, it's up near the HBH, so no -- not that one.

You know where the Galleria Kaufhof is? I believe the store was there, but it looks like it's been "renovated." I sure don't recall that monstrous, post-modern, monolith from 1990 -- but who knows? I just don't think that would have been inviting for me to just walk in off the street.

Only saw the "HBH" part and not the added notes when I posted....

It seems like that Kaufhof has been there forever, and I don't recall any other big-ass stores right off the M-Platz....

Was it always that ugly? I don't recall all of those geometric cement monoliths -- just doesn't look inviting to walk in blind -- which I did.
