It seems like some of the online homebrew retailers I frequent are replacing many of their Weyermann base malts with (usually) less expensive German malts. Best and Avangard come to mind. I also saw Swaen (from Holland) I feel like I have seen others too. As I've always been happy with Weyermann, I wonder how you perceive these other maltsters products? My upcoming Maibock will have ~30% Avangard Munich.

I enjoy Best, haven't used Avangard. It may be that they are sourcing from Country (which carries Best) rather than BSG (which carries Weyermann). Many breweries and homebrew stores order from either/or, but not both.

I have used Best Pilsner malt and I am pleased with it.

I hope to brew with Durst Pilsner malt someday.

On a separate topic I am a fan of Belgian Malts. For example I think that Castle Pilsner malt is of high quality.

    Cheers!

My home brew store is stocking Avangard. I am getting ready to brew a slew of lagers so we will see.

I've used Avangard a lot the last year and have been happy with the Pilsner, wheat, Vienna, and Munich. Great value and not much drop off from Weyermann in terms of quality. I'm currently fermenting a pale ale with the Avangard pale ale and should have an idea on that as well in the next few weeks.

Ive used avangaard pilsner vienna light and dark munich. They were all excellent I think the dark munich is fantastic. I can't compare them to another German maltster.

I've brewed with Weyerman and Best brands, but have come to the conclusion lately that continental Munich is really the only grain I use/need consistently for what I brew most. I also used to use a lot of MO, GP, and Belgian Pale Ale, but lately have been more than satisfied with NA Pale ALE malts as a base...not a big Pilsner fan of any brand.
Of course, if looking for things like pale chocolate, crystal rye, chocolate rye, melanoiden, special B, etc. you don't have much choice (IMHO).

My only experience with Schill was using Schill Kolsch Malt to brew a Kolsch. I thought that beer turned out well. There was a hay-like quality to that beer which I enjoyed.

There are the ones imported that have been mentioned, Avangard, Best, Durst, Schill, Weyermann.

So people know, there are many that are malted in Germany that we don't see. Bamberger, malteurope, Cargill, Ireks (Malt extract is in some LHBS), Global Malt, Heine and several smaller ones.

Never heard of this (although I just googled them). I imagine you might have a chance to try lots of German malts and are able to compare your results against fresh German beers I'm envious! And I'm interested in hearing what you like, if you care to share.

I typically use Belgian Pilsner malt when making saison and Trappist styles. I have sometimes subbed Weyermann Pils and have enjoyed the results. I once subbed a combo of American Pils and American Munich in a dubbel, along with specialty malts, and did not care for the results. It's always difficult for me to pinpoint reasons for failures and success in old recipes of mine -- too many process changes to really let me distinguish ingredient impacts from other factors. However, I stopped using US malts for anything but American styles as a consequence of this dubbel and a dunkleweizen that I tried to make with US malts.

I tried the Kolsch malt once, which I think was Schill. I cut it 50-50 with Weyermann Pils, which you may surmise, I really like. It was a delicious Kolsch style beer, although I think the one I made last spring with a double decocted 100% Weyermann Floor Malted Bohemian Pilsner malt was perhaps the best beer I ever made,

I believe I have seen Global from North American retailers in the past, but I do not think I have used it.

Peter, it has been my consistent experience that North American Pilsner malt is more neutral than Continental Pilsner Malt. So it come down to what exactly you are looking for in terms of Pilsner malt flavor contribution.

As a point of example I choose to use Rahr Premium Pilsner Malt to brew my 1896 Michelob beer. IMO this was an excellent choice. That malt provided some Pilsner Malt flavor (less than Weyermann as point of example) but still very enjoyable none the less. An analogy could be hop aroma/flavor. Weyermann malt flavor might be analogous to Citra hops and Rahr Premium Pilsner Malt might be analogous to Cascade hops. Which intensity do you prefer for a given batch of beer?

    Cheers!

I think I have come to prefer Best Malz over Weyermann

Ive actually gone out of my way to get ahold of a sack of Best Dark Munich when a local spot had Weyermann in-store

Sometimes I think there is this "cadillac" image that some of the maltsters/malts get around here and other homebrew boards, but there are lots of amazing malts out there that just dont get the credit they deserve

    For example

With MO, I always hear that Fawcett or Crisp are the best, but I think I actually prefer Muntons as it has a smoother less husky flavor (slightly sweeter too)

For Pils I think weyermann is good but I actually prefer Franco Belges or Castle (more smooth, with a hint of graininess)

    etc, etc, etc........
