I know a few old timers that used to work on the bottling line at Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) in Melbourne, and they would often more than drink their fill during a shift. I'm hoping the forklift driver at least waited until his spell behind the levers had ended!

Elders IXL (note the "s") was famously run by a bloke called John Elliot, a man with a gigantic beak and rough-as-guts personality who was also a brilliant corporate leader. He famously cleaned out fellow 80s entrepreneur Allan Bond after Bond launched a raid on the eastern seaboard beer market, over which Elders' CUB had held hegemony, and after he also bought a television station that Elliot held a controlling interest in that Elliot subsequently bought back at about a quarter of the price. Elliot was famously quoted as saying "You only get one Alan Bond in your lifetime, and I've had mine" after the latter deal.

[It has since been pointed out by @MrKennedy below that the last bit above about the television station buyout involved a totally different businessman, and not John Elliott, so please ignore that bit! @AzfromOz 12 Feb 23]

Bond eventually had a bigger (negative) affect on the US brewing industry than Elders IXL, by buying Pittsburgh (Iron City) Brewing Co. in 1986 and then a successful attempt the following year at taking over the Fourth largest US brewing company at the time, G. Heileman. Heileman operated about a dozen breweries at the time, brewing brands like Old Style, Blatz, Carling Black Label, Lone Star, Rainier, both Schmidt and Schmidt's , Tuborg, Rheingold, Stag, Sterling, Grain Belt, Champale, Colt 45 and many, many more.

Heileman soon after had Bond-created financial problems, started selling off brands and spinning-off breweries or closing them until it was sold first to an investment firm in 1993 and then in 1996 to US's then-#4 brewer, Stroh, which was also failing and would only last until 1999. Heileman's barrelage during the period went from 14M bbl. (1986) to 7.6M bbl (1995).

Actually, you're right! That's really stupid of me - I got myself totally mixed up there!

Apologies all, and let this be a lesson to you all about believing anything I say...

    Cheers!
