So i started getting serious about beer about a year ago, maybe a bit less, and I have been trying every highly rated beer I can find for that time period. When people talk about their "go to" beer or an affordable 6 pack they like to pick up I have nothing to contribute because I am running out to grab Parabola or trying the latest seasonal...is there a point where this slows down and I can go back to grabbing a 6er of Sculpin, a 4 pack of Dbl Jack or a 6er of Lil Sumpin Sumpin or am I just doing this all wrong? I am a VERY competitive person so if there is something out there rated a "4.28" that I havent tried I am going to buy it so I can try it (for example ive actually got Sucaba, Parabola and FW 17 all in my fridge right now and I haven't tried any of them). Do i need to drink more or was there a point in everyone's "beer tasting career" where you were able to say "i've tried to highly rated stuff and now I know I like x, y, and z and I will try new stuff on occasion"?

Thanks everyone for your feedback

Yep it'll pass and you'll have a cellar of about 200+ beers in the mean time if your like me.. to so it all over again. I've tried just about every beer that's the "best must try" beer out there. There's only a few others but at this point I'm not in any big rush.. it'll happen when it happens.

Been there right with you... had the beer epiphany. Started grabbing up all the highly rated beers (just because I could, as I travel a lot), and started stockpiling in the fridge and the basement. Oh, and started to gain some weight too, imagine that! After completely filling 1-1/2 refrigerators and an entire 5 tier shelving unit in my basement, I realized... there was no way in hell I was going to drink all this beer before it starts to go to shit.

it was at that point when I reigned it in, and just started buying just enough of what I wanted to enjoy and share for a given weekend.

it was kind of painful having to fill up cartons with bottles of really good, some rather hard to get beers and just give them away to friends, just so they could be consumed. I gave one guy a case box full of singles and bombers that was worth around $200 and he just said, "Wow... thanks, cool."

    I learned my lesson.

Personally, once I developed an appreciation for different base styles it just made those crazy highly rated ones taste that much better (or not). There's only so much highly rated stuff to go around and you're robbing yourself of experiencing a lot of other great beers if that's where your focus is. With the ones you mentioned, those cellar very nicely and most are better with age on them as opposed to cracking them young - not only that, start acquiring some verticals of those crazy beers to compare and appreciate how they change over time. I chase the big ones when I can for cellaring and enjoy the Sculpins, Jacks, and _____ in between and save those big boys for celebrating special occasions / sharing with other geeks / or sometimes just enjoying at the "right" moment.

(Doesn't make your method right or wrong, just my 2 cents on how I roll and it works for me - for what it's worth.)

You'll find a groove eventually. The mix between beers you've tried before and love and the new ones just coming out will mesh.

Or you'll go bankrupt. Either way.

I'm getting over it right now. Just keep trying new beers but just the beers in 6 packs. The limited release beers I've found to be mostly overhyped and over rated!

95% of the beer that I buy are beers that I've never had. I don't see that changing anytime soon. I say if that's what makes you happy, keep it up. Fair warning though, you'll eventually collect more than you can drink, hence the near 400 bottles in my cellar.

It'll pass...until the annual BCBS release and then it starts all over again.

Sure it takes time and many have this gotta run out and try everything...

What you will find after trying many beers, is that you will find old reliable easy to acquire standards that you can always rely on.

Your selection of new beers will dwindle, and you will come full circle to what you always already knew.

Yet the hunt never ceases.. but dont look at this as a competition. If you do, the only person you beat will be yourself.

I've had the same issue and have acquired way too much inventory. Sometimes I just have to hold back from buying for a week or so and concentrate on inventory depletion. I believe I'll deplete a 4 pack or two this weekend.

Drinking more is always a viable answer until bankruptcy, health issues, relationship complications, or the point where you start giving zj's for a taste of the newest bcbs release sets in.

But, there are so many brewers making so much good beer, you'll never "win." It's like a delicious, insidious game of beer drinking whack-a-mole. It's fun as shit until you run out of quarters, get carpal tunnel, and start questioning the futility of existence.

You're not alone. I'm certain I enjoy buying beer more than I enjoy drinking it -- and I enjoy drinking it A LOT.

I have one refrigerator and live in Texas, so my "cellar" is very limited. That's helped me calm the buying habit.

I started drinking a regular rotation of "go-to" beers about 4-5 months into my dive into craft beer because I got tired of having a fridge full of beer I didn't like. A beer might be highly-rated, but if you don't like it, what difference does the rating make? I asked that question enough times until I said "F this" and started drinking pilseners and English pales about 80% of the time ... because I really like pilseners and English pales ...

Of course, if you really like everything, you're screwed.

What does that have to do with beer?

I think once your "cellar" gets a couple years on it, you can start regularly harvesting beers. Then just replace what you drink (with something else) and supplement with session/IPA's as needed.

Beer shouldn't be a "competitive" hobby.
