We’re having a Bourbon County tasting tomorrow, and I was just curious what the mob has to say about it.

All opinions are welcome, but I’m mainly asking the folks who have done this before, and maybe learn something from your mistakes.

What order did you do it in, and what would’ve you done different – if anything?

    Here’s the lineup:

    08 BCBS x2 (or 3 or 4…)
    09 BCBS Bomber
12 BCBS (maybe - might not need it)
    12 BCBCS
    13 BCBCS
    13 BCBBW
    BCBS Bramble
    BCBVS
    BCBS Cherry Rye
    BCBS Backyard Rye
    BCBS Proprietors
    BCBS Rare
    Palate cleansers:
    Lolita
    Gillian (maybe)
    Madam Rose (maybe)
**whatever else that may come out of my cellar

We weren’t too worried about getting every single year of BSBS & BCBCS.
And we decided to leave King Henry out of the equation, mainly because we’ve all had it before and figured we have enough as it is.

My personal opinion is that we should go big right off the bat; something like ’09 BCBS Bomber, BCBVS, ’08, Rare – and then go from there.
I just think that the Backyard, Cherry & Bramble would torch our palates to shreds to where we won’t be able to appreciate the Rare, 08 BCBS & Vanilla.
    What do you think???

Either way, I’m sure we’ll have a great time.
    Cheers!

My opinion is that you're doing too much. There's really no reason to do them all together. By the time you finish your palate will be wrecked anyway and you'll be pretty toasted.

I like how you have beer for palate cleansing. I've only had '13
bcbs but your order there looks good.

edit, the guy above has a good point. just cut it in half and have another night of barrel aged goodness. I would just do a basic vertical and a few variety bottles after if you are still awake.

    Here is my opinion.

I would start with the 2012 BCBS to establish a baseline. I would then do the Rare followed by Prop and BCBVS.

I would then do a palate cleanse and follow the palate cleanse up the BCBCS. I have not had Bramble, so I don't know where I would fit it in.

The Cherry Rye and Backyard Rye are really desert beers and from my experience are the perfect compliment to Cheesecake.

I would save the older BCBS's for a BCBS vertical.

If you were to follow your order, by the time you got to the Rare you're palates will be toasted and everyone would be too buzzed to really appreciate the nuances of the variants.

    It is an epic line-up!

    Cheers!

I'd say chuck the reg BCBS and BCBBW and do an all variant tasting. Do Rare, Vanilla, and Prop first, then the coffees, finish out with bramble, cherry, backyard. if you're still thirsty drink some reg.

edit: if you like this plan do I get an invite? =)

I've done a similar, although smaller, tasting and I would definitely drink the Rare prior to the bramble or backyard. The bramble is still pretty sweet and I can only assume the backyard is as well and will effect your palate.. You need to savor that Rare!

Thanks. And I agree about the Rare and Vanilla.
That isn't our order, just the way I penned it down.

Now if we can talk the man with the Rare into it.
He insists it must be last...
There just may be a mutiny ahead...lol

Do the different years blind against each other and the coffee's blind against each other. That way you'll be able to tell if age helped the beers without bias.

How many people do you have? Did this a few months ago with 6 others and our palates were fine, even did a lambic tasting after heh Did the BCBS vert first, starting with '08, then coffee, Rare and KH, finished off with the variants (Vanilla, Bramble, KH, Cherry Rye and Backyard were the stand-outs to me, Rare was right behind them).

I think it's too much, honestly. I think it would make two great tastings: one just for BCBS vintages, and one for diferent variants. You can go from youngest to oldest BCBS, and see if you can tell how the age has really affected it. Separately, I think the different variants should be sufficiently unique that it would make a really interesting tasting all by itself (with a single, regular BCBS as a baseline).

However you go about it, let us know how it goes!

How many people? The second half of that tasting is going to be impossible to remember.

I'm with this. Unless you've got an army, that's quite a bit of Bourbon County for one night's tasting. Though I'd love to be able to try all of those beers, you've got quite the cellar man!
