I'm no gin expert, but I've never heard of a gin barrel. Aged in barrels, I think you've got some sort of whisky with juniper flavor added.

They are rare, but there's a handful of barrel-aged gins. The main reason several Portland breweries (Upright, Breakside, etc) have been making gin barrel-aged stuff is because Ransom Spirits is a local producer of Old Tom Gin.

To get the flavor of gin, just add some lighter fluid and pine needles to the brew kettle. Gin is the most noxious form of alcholol in existance.

    I love a great martini, but I can't see
    What juniper brings to beer.

juniper and hops are a great mix. I've got a cocktail going on my summer menu that has a london dry gin that I nitrogen-infused with columbus hops. no heat applied at all, so the hop aromatics are really bright and fresh, and it plays very well with the botanical flavors in the gin.

seriously ... why would i want my beer to taste like gin/whiskey-barrel-aged-gin? shouldn't i just drink some gin?

i love beer because it does NOT taste like alcohol. the aged thing seems completely bass-ackwards to me (for the record, I have an espresso BBA Yeti in the fridge and plans to try other BBA brews so that i can learn about which i know nothing)

I'd love to see a Genever barrel aged IPA thrown through a Randall with some fresh hops.

That sounds absolutely glorious to me.

As a homebrewer, I'm toying with this idea.
