I am also interested in some feedback. Was thinking about stopping on my way to the beach tomorrow night.

Haven't had a chance to try it but that's my roommate from college and his buddies. He's in the service so ill be down to visit the brewery when he comes home.

He's told me a bunch of stuff and it sounds great.

Just curious, did you guys end up checking Glasstown out? I was there twice over the past weekend and all nine of the beers they had on tap were awesome. Spent half an hour chatting with the owner and looking over the brewing equipment as well! I just wish I lived closer and could make it a regular stop (I happened to be in the area for a wedding).

I love this place. Such a chill little spot with a few tvs for the game, solid quality beer, and free popcorn. I'm always sure to stop by when I'm in the area. The brewery reminds me of all of those garage breweries they have out in southern California

No, never had a chance to but it is on my agenda for this summer. Good feedback though; this place has been on my radar for a while.

Any idea why? Lots of subpar breweries still making it in NJ, well for now anyway.

Not really sure; one fellow BA I met at Glasstown said Turtle Stone wasn't anything special, but didn't know the specific reason they closed.

That's certainly the truth. Subpar, and in at least a few cases selling over-priced subpar product.
Brewing is a very competitive business and consumers are, I think, discovering that 'local' does not always mean 'better'.

    Resurrecting an old thread here....

I was finally able to swing by two weeks ago on a Thursday night. A very chill place to have a beer and hang out, had a neighboorhood bar vibe to it a bit (everyone seemed to know each other.) The beers were firmly in that "above average" zone with a couple creeping into "good." I enjoyed the "Stout with No Name" the most. "Toxic Avenger" (session IPA) grew on me the more I sipped it. I would definitely go back and recommend a stop on your way to the shore.

I was finally able to get down to Glasstown. Neat spot but dont go on a really hot day..no air conditioning. If there is no wind good luck.. . I really enjoyed their 609 IPA and Smith and Wood Foundry Ale.

Which ones do you think are subpar? Curious.

I don't think it would be very good form (and certainly not very good "netiquette") to name names in a public forum. And besides, just because i may have found a place lacking in some ways, I certainly wouldn't want to steer someone away from a place that they may actually like.

Taste is subjective, and as the old saying goes, one man's poison is another's elixir. One should only trust their own tastebuds and I'm just a fussy bastard.

But I give props to anyone who has the balls to take the plunge and scare up the necessary money to have a go at what is becoming a very crowded and competitive marketplace.
Even the breweries I wasn't especially impressed with will probably find an audience and hopefully thrive. And the truly, heinously bad ones will die a merciful death on their own anyway.

So on a beer website where we say good and bad things about breweries and their individual beers on literally every thread you think it's bad form to name which breweries you think are not great? The primary purpose of this website is reviewing beers. You can't do that without naming names!

LOL. I get what you're saying.
Honestly, it's just a personal thing.
The ratings area serves it's purpose for actually reviewing beers, though it really all should be taken with a grain of salt.

As far as 'naming names' with regard to the scene here in the Garden State, I wouldn't characterize any of the breweries in NJ as 'great' (far from it, actually).
Most seem at least competent, and a couple are even 'pretty good'; but none are remotely what I would consider 'great' (again, only my opinion). And a few of them should probably have stayed with home brewing (but I do admire their passion).
In the end they do all seem to find an audience, but sometimes it truly amazes me to see what the public is willing to accept (and be willing to pay premium prices for).
