I haven't been there since they moved to this location. I'll have to make a stop when I'm in that area again. Thanks for the info.

I could be remembering incorrectly, but I could swear that I once heard that the NCAA complained to GL about the name Heisman, because of the trophy with the same name. Hence the rename to Dortmunder Gold.

GL website has a fact sheet you can download that says they changed the name because of the gold medals the beer won, but they don't get into why they chose to make the change. Gotta wonder.

Yeah it is. A significant amount of beer in PA is still purchased by the case (consumer habit inertia from when PA laws forced most take-home beer purchases to be cases only) and results in some really good prices for beers that move quickly.

This announcement from last year on the GLBC site for the DG move to cans has mention of it as their flagship. https://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/node/3576

You'd think they would make more mention if they're proud. The mysteries of beer marketing run deep.

The importer of Augustiner is Global Village Imports and they rent office space at my local Retail Beer Distributor. I was just there a hour ago hoping to buy a recent collaboratively brewed mix-pack from New Trails Brewing but no luck there (they received it last Monday and sold out by Thursday). I checked out the Edelstoff they had in stock and those beers were bottled on day 226 of 2020 (Aug. 13, 2020). I thought about buying it but this beer is basically at the 6 month mark which is my personal cut-off for German brewed beers. This six-pack was more reasonably priced though: $9.99. A 'benefit' of the importer being co-located with retailer?

    Cheers!

I always kept some Dortmunder Gold in the refrigerator when I lived in the Louisville, KY area. Sadly since moving to the Florida panhandle, I have not found an adequate replacement. One liquor store does occasionally carry Edelstoff.

Edelstoff showed up her about a month ago, it's sitting on the shelf at $15/6. At that price it will just keep sitting.

Wow...that is a great couple of kegs for a wedding. GL Dortmunder has been a long time favorite of mine although to be fair I haven't had it recently as it is not available near me....HeadHunter is one of my favorite IPA's and again one that is even harder to get near me..

Right, very sad that they only keep raising the prices since I've watched it languishing around here for years. I can't imagine their U.S. sales can be good.

Yeah this baffles me. I must clearly not understand the business side of it. But wouldn't selling a lot of the product at 9.99 per sixer be better than selling none at $15?

Because with beer not selling at $15 then it gets old and even those that buy it get a diminished product and don't buy it again.

Lower price should= not only more sales but fresher product which should result in more sales right? Who knows...I'm not in the business but that would make sense...

I think you striked the surface of gold, like many others. This Dormunder Lager is one of the best beers on the market. Smooth earthy honey with flowery hops. It drinks smooth and clean. Not surprised you labeled it as the best. I would agree that this one is hard to argue against and is definitely one of the best macro beers on the market. Cheers!

"Macro" ? Great Lakes' yearly barrelage is in the 150,000 bbl. range.

Well, I waited until the next day, at least.:grimacing:

I don't watch sports, so what else is there to post about on this snowy mornin' ?

Here's a good craft brewing trivia question - well, I guess it's actually one of the answer to "Name some old-line brewing industry veterans involved in the early craft breweries?"

GL's first brewmaster was Thain Johnson, who had worked at the C. Schmidt & Son's* brewery in Cleveland and, probably** at Theo. Hamm (St. Paul), Falstaff (St. Louis) and Wiedemann's.

    * Also, interesting (to some people...) - "Schmidt's of Philadelphia" actually operated two different breweries in Cleveland - the old Standard Brewing plant (owned by Schaefer for awhile in the 60s) and, latter, the old Carling brewery. (The latter famous for being the original home of the Peerless Motor Car Co.)

** At least, those companies had a brewer with the same name - how many "Thain Johnson - master brewers" could there have been? Coulda been his father/other relative, I guess. Going into brewing was a real family tradition for lots of brewmasters.

It was actually the NY Athletic Club that took umbrage. They do a little thing called the Heisman trophy every year. Apparently didn’t like a beer using ‘ their’ name. GLBC originally used the name because Heisman was born in Ohio City not far from their brewery. My office is about 100 yards from GLBC which is both wonderful and dangerous at the same time

In November of '18 TW emailed me, advising "truckloads of GLBC products" were coming to Florida. Having enjoyed their beer before, including on a visit to their taproom, I hit TW's at once, and they didn't disappoint. Loaded up on Dortmunder and Ed Fitz, and was a happy camper. It was a one time only invasion, and a reply to an email to GLBC said "sorry, no more wholesale to FL". Given the usual Florida bs, I'm not surprised. Sure miss that DG.

I'd still buy that Edelstoff just for the fact that the price makes it a steal compared to any other place I've seen it sold in the US. Like others have said, it's always around $15. And to think you found it at that price in PA, where I think it was in 2014 that Frontier Saloon was trying to get $16 for a six of Prima Pils.
