Looks like CBA had already trademarked the "Alchemy" name.

Alchemy Hour Double IPA: An Update

In light of the recent chatter concerning our Alchemy Hour Double IPA, we feel it’s appropriate to inform our faithful following about what is in store for our hugely popular and newest Seasonal. First and foremost, the response we’ve received for Alchemy Hour has been nothing short of incredible. Thank you for all of your Facebook posts, Tweets, emails, and personal comments. You have filled each and every one of us with a sense of pride. You are the reason we take chances, create new products, and commit ourselves to introducing only the most exceptional beer to the market. After all, it’s the liquid in the bottle that matters most! We are proud that we’ve made so many happy with Alchemy Hour, and we are excited to inform everyone that this beer will return in 2014!

Now to the “business” part: due to an unforeseen trademark matter with Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (CBA) and Widmer Brothers Brewing (CBA is a unique alliance of three beer brands: Widmer Brothers Brewing, Redhook Brewery, and Kona Brewing Company), we will not be able to continue with the “Alchemy Hour” name after 2013. As many of you know, we value the stories behind each one of our beers, and Alchemy Hour is no exception. Our Alchemy Hour Double IPA was inspired by the Great Lakes’ surf community. The name, Alchemy Hour, came from a surf term that we felt also applied to the magic our brewers make each time they create a new batch of delicious beer. The artwork and name were carefully designed to capture all of the elements that we feel make this Seasonal so great. As it happens, the fellow brewers at CBA/Widmer Brothers also saw the value in the mark “Alchemy” for their products some years ago, secured the rights to the mark, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Before we close the chapter on the name “Alchemy Hour”, we’d love to share answers to some of the questions we expect to receive:

At least the beer will be back next year. I don't really mind a name change, as long as the beer remains the same. I really enjoyed this one and wish I would have bought more when I found it. A 4-pack wasn't nearly enough!!

I think it's funny that Widmer's Alchemy Ale has only 3 ratings since 2010. And Widmer named their Imperial IPA "Nelson" which is named after one of the most popular IPAs out there.

This is pretty lame if you ask me, but hey whatever, it's business. At least it doesn't take away from how it smells and tastes..

Hey, I'll buy it whatever they call it. I love GLBC and this is probably my favorite of their brews. Screw CBA/Widmer.

As others said, as long as it is back I could care less what its called. I was lucky enough to get the last four pack at the store, and am glad that I did.

This beer has really been growing on me, especially at 5.52 a 4 pack . As long as the same artwork I am sure they can come up with some exciting new name.

I am a little confused though on one part of this. I have never seen or noticed any of these CBA products in Ohio. Are they trying to trademark the name alchemy on the use of any beer or what exactly? Can you trademark any word on a label? If that's the case, it seems very petty and kind of takes the spirit away from brewing and appears that those who do this are really just in the game for profit.

Yes! The closest place to me to buy alcohol is a local pub/pizza joint. They sell all their carryout beer for half of what they sell it for inside. All great lakes beers are $1.38 a bottle to go.

Does this mean I can sell one on Ebay for $500, or trade for a Rare?

Wow. I can't believe they are making much of a profit at that price. Would it look obvious that there prices are insanely low if you took every possible 4 pack?

Probably not, I think I am the only who is buying it there anyways. It's not a place that has much good beer--alchemy hour is the best beer they have second to magic hat #9 if that says anything. I will slowly be cleaning them out though...

Wow three crap brewers form an axis of crap to crap on other brewers....nobody would ever confuse anything they actually enjoy with anything from redhook, widmer or kona.

Great beer, but I won't miss the name...didn't really roll off the tongue as well as the beer inside rolled over the tongue. Perhaps a naming contest is in order??
