I would ask what their favorite beer has been in the past. If Guiness, I would give them a Prairie Bomb. If something like Bud, Coors light, etc., then a Lagunitas Sucks

Sweetwater 420 and Sam Adams Boston Ale seem to be good "gateway" beers. Here in Atlanta I have found that Seven Sisters at 5 Seasons is a good introduction to brewpubs.

If the person doesn't like beer, give them something that doesn't taste like "beer": a big, juicy pineapple-y, graprefruit-y, tropical IPA or a big coffee flavored, chocolaty (or bourbon-y) stout.

I've converted a few with things like Widmer Hefe, Alaskan Amber, SN Pale. I guess the more mild, the better.

Thank you. Usually this sort of response is one of the first 5 responses to this sort of thread, as it should be.

I completely agree. The intended meaning of this thread creation was not to find the best way or even the best beer to actively change someones mind, it was to talk generally about beers that are good for transitioning novice beer drinkers into the craft beer side if interest is present. By no means was I promoting someone to run around town knocking BCBS over random peoples heads who have absolutely no interest. I was saying if someone was to show interest in craft beer, what would you serve them. An excellent example was my father, he showed an interest after observing all of the interesting things I have consumed, so I tried something out on him and boom he fell in love and is now just as into craft beer as I am.

While I agree that people will drink what they want. I find that RR Consecration has been a great example of what beer can be to many of my wine-centric friends. It has prompted several of my friends to explore beer further.

Just like a lot of stories here I surprisingly have had the best responses from IPAs (lagunitas IPA, Grapefruit Sculpin & G'Knight) I assumed it would be lighter, less offensive beers but it seems people want big flavor - it just needs to be the right flavor for their palate at the time. As a big fan of all things coffee it was a coffee porter that first sucked me in but before then I hated all lighter stuff like lagers, Belgian wits and Hefes (though now I like them)So it's best to steer them to a flavor profile they already enjoy. If a buddy pounds a bag of warheads in his spare time then it's probably a good bet to start with a sour. Or I have found that some hops like Nelson can taste a little bit like white wine and could appeal to wine drinkers. Beer has so much variety that I had no idea existed until about 3 years ago and I'm betting a lot of people are in the same boat.
