The Budweiser tv ad for their new fangled beer states "golden amber" lager. Is there such a thing as golden amber? SMH.

That kinda offends me. If youre making a a new beer why not make a pale ale or stout? Even if they suck, which they probably would, its still better than that "Golden Amber Lager" nonsense.

Right, because that's what the works is waiting for. Budweiser Stout. At least they know their target.

Maybe not officially (per the BJCP and such), but that's still a pretty valid description. A lot of the central European beers labeled "Lagerbier" would fall into a grouping like that.

The Brewers Association style guidelines (the style guidelines used at the GABF) has an amber lager category:

    American-Style Amber Lager
American-style amber lagers are gold to copper colored. Chill haze should not be perceived. There is a low to medium-low degree of caramel-type or toasted malt character in flavor and often in aroma. Hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma may be very low to medium high. They are medium bodied. Fruity esters and diacetyl should be absent.
    Original Gravity (ºPlato) 1.042-1.056 (10.5-13.8 ºPlato) ● Apparent Extract/Final Gravity (ºPlato) 1.010-1.018 (2.5-4.5 ºPlato) ● Alcohol by Weight (Volume) 3.8-4.3% (4.8-5.4%) ● Bitterness (IBU) 18-30 ● Color SRM (EBC) 6-14 (12-28 EBC)

    Cheers!

The very word (s) "amber lager" makes me thirsty. I have absolutely no clue what it is, but it shore sounds inviting. Sign me up. I want some.

Well, some people call red beers amber, so calling golden beers amber isn't that crazy.

"Amber" is one of the most overused, and misused, words in beer vernacular. People usually use it in reference to a red, ruby, ruddy brown, or copper color. Amber is closer to yellow than red. Pisses me off. Just google image search amber, and you will see what color it really is...

Sounds like a perfectly good color descriptor to me. Why are folks here trying to make it into a style?

Stiegl Goldbrau would be a perfect place to start if one was looking for that color. Finding it in good condition could be tricky, but it's a pretty good beer if you do (an interesting borderline Vienna-ish quality, from my last experience).
