Im taking a week long vacation up in Weekapaug first week in August. Never been there but based on its' location, I assume theres some good beer to be had. Any recommendations? Any good day trips you can recommend outside of Weekapaug for good beer? Thanks.
I've lived in RI my whole life and this is the first I'm hearing of Weekapaug. The only thing that comes to mind that's somewhat nearby is the Malter Barley in Westerly, which has a whole bunch of taps. Grey Sail is also nearby. They don't make anything spectacular in my opinion, but might be worth checking out as they seem to have interesting versions of things on cask.
Grey and Malted Barley are pretty close, as previously mentioned. Beer'd is also close by in Stonington, CT. You're also about an hour from Newport, RI which has a decent scene. Cottrell is close by in Pawcatuck. Mystic, CT isn't far off and I've heard good things about the Engine Room. How far are you willing to travel?
Thanks. I haven't been to Weekapaug before, my in-laws have a house there. Apparently, it's a small beech front town where wealthy people go to hang out. Something Im totally unfamiliar with. Theres also a Phish (ugh) song named after it which was then used to name a beer (gruit) as I have recently found out on the forums. So, I'll be in the town, with a song named after it, that inspired a beer.
For what it's worth.... You can be in Providence in less than an hour, where you can check out a number of solid beer bars. Track 84 is the best bar in the state and you could be there in less than 45 minutes.
I heard there is good beer near Al Harrington's Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tubeman Emporium and Warehouse. edit: I apologize.
My wife grew up in SK and her parents still live. Her response "I've heard of it, but I couldn't even begin to tell you where Weekapaug is" You're not alone. For such a small place, there are a lot of remote areas of RI.
Turns out we are near Westerly and Grey Sail is only 10 minutes away. Made it there yesterday and had some great beers. Great atmosphere and conversation as well. Definitely recommend going there if you are up this way. Looking forward to see where Grey Sail goes over the next few years. Seemed like they had a good start to becoming a great brewery. We spent more time there than expected and couldn't make it to Beer'd before they closed unfortunately. Also spent some time at Malted Barley. Great place, great service. Really food beer selection and the pretzels were tasty. Also recommend going there. Hopefully, will find a few more places before the end of vacation.
Al Harrington as in former Pacers, Hawks, Warriors, Knicks, Nuggets, Magic, and Nuggets power forward?? If so, what does he know about good beer?!
Made my way up to Providence for a bit today. First stop was Nikki's Liquors. Excellent, excellent place. Interestingly enough, tomorrow they are opening their new beer archive room which they said has over 10 years of rare beers in it. If you can make it tomorrow or the next day when they open you will probably find a few great things. Next I stopped at Trinity. Was ok, nothing special. Reminded me of what a brew pub was like 10-15 years ago. Mediocre food, a bit dirty, and average beer. Wasn't really impressed. Final stop was at Track 84 based on Providence's recommendation. This place is interesting. Some really good beer on tap and they gave me a lot of samples. Really nice bartender. I had the Heavy Sea's on cask with Simcoe hops and it was pretty good.
