So recently I went river tubing with some friends of mine and got absolutely sloshed. On the way back we decided we needed fried chicken and stumbled across a Roy Rogers (which was a rare sighting anyway). Connected to the parking lot was a liquor store that looked like it had been there since dirt was clean. I wandered to the back where the beer was and looked up in the rafters, and oddly enough, they had a small supply of craft beer. I wasn't thinking clearly, so I just picked the four pack with the highest abv and the most dust I could find.

Low and behold, it was a 6.5% Altbier from Heavyweight Brewing which sadly closed in 2006!

I finally chilled one down and cracked it open. Minimal to no head, but really nice candied fruit, dark sugar, and malt coming through.

It made me sad that the brewery wasn't around anymore - but it got me wondering what beers other people have found out there from dead breweries.

Speaking of Altbiers, I have a bottle of Akron/Macon Ale from Blimp City Brewing in Akron, Ohio which closed in 2003.

Loved Heavy Weight especially Perkunos Hammer. My last few bottles died a very painful death. I kept saving for a special occasion. Sadly that day ended in oxidized hell!

I just opened a 1999 Blanche De Charleroi last week. Sounds insane I know, but I found it not long ago at a package store in the boondocks and was curious, and I have to say for a 13yr old Wit is was very tasty. Yeast cake was huge, but it still had a little spice to it. I was stunned.
Pennichuck Brewing died painfully in 2009 and I've since found their Pompier, St. Florian's, Engine 5, Rustwagen, Big O, and their Feuerwerhmann (spelling?) over the last year and they've all been surprisingly good. The Rustwagen was a yeast cake in the bottom but was still a very good Hefe, the Big O had no surprises and was one of the better Oktoberfest beers I've had. The Pompier was infected but turned into an awesome sour beer, I'm sad I didn't buy the four other bottles they had when I had the chance.
