I think they meant the non BA version. Which I also recommend. Smooth and creamy.

IMO stouts, non-imperial and non-BA, are much more approachable than robust porters. The English style porters are good ones to try, though.

I actually think Murphy's is a good stout - a mix of creamy and bitter and good body to it. Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is a good one. Left Hand Milk Stout and Nitro are good. Now that I think of it! there aren't that many regular stouts brewed. NC has a few good ones (Highland, NoDa, Duck Rabbit, Birdsong).

Haven't had Obsidian from Deschutes but love Black Butte Porter, so I'm sure Obsidian is good. Another two I haven't tried but would recommend due to the breweries are Avery Out of Bounds Stout and Troeg's Java Head Stout (coffee stout).

You guys are all over looking the obvious. Guiness is the perfect entry level stout. Dry,not too roasted or alcoholic-the perfect runway to, well....let's say Oskar blues ten fidy perhaps!

Most people would probably pickup a Guinness as their first stout, what a shame, mostly because it's dirt cheap and widely available. However I Love a good Samuel Smith stout. The Samuel Smith Oatmeal is a really smooth stout. Young's Double Chocolate Stout is another good one or Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout. Sometimes I like the Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout, but dare I say it is not for beginners and very bitter. I'm drinking a Samuel Smith's The Famous Taddy Porter right now, it's not a stout, but rather a porter, some would say they are the same thing. Ahhhh.. that refreshing sweet roasted malt and a smooth creamy head.

Well, shit. I didn't even know they made non-BA version. I've never seen it in WI, but I don't really enjoy BA Dragon's Milk, or New Holland (save Pilgrim's Dole), so I wasn't (and won't be) looking. I stand corrected.

Funny how I came to this thread to say the exact same thing! At least about the Founders since I never tried the other. Founders Porter was my first introduction into dark beers and to be honest, I hated my first one! I had bought a 6 pack and wondered how I was going to finish it. But after I had another one, I really acquired a taste for it. Now after trying many porters, I think Founders Porter is the best there is. Just don't give up on your first one, enjoy!

I like coffee and have a sweet tooth, so something along the lines of Founders Breakfast Stout as mentioned above would be a great beginner stout. Maybe also look into the Milk/Sweet Stout style before delving into the stronger stouts.

Piperworks makes awesome stouts. FFF Moloko, if you can still find it. Left Hand Nitro is nice. Lagunitas Stout is great and a great price at 4.49 for a bomber. Youngs Double Chocolate is easy to drink and tasty. If you can find a KBS - you will be blown away. Milk stouts in general will be sweeter than regular stouts because of the lactate they use in the process. In drinking a stout, the key is to let it warm to the right temperate to get the full flavor profile.

While I have had a few stouts and love me an imperial, having just recently had this I would also suggest this as a beginner stout.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout was my gateway into loving stouts. That along with Left Hand Milk Stout put me onto the style and gave me a starting point as to the things I liked about the style.
