so my husband is going to Vancouver to a conference... and I will have a crazy week with a ton of work and taking care of my son solo.

Since he's staying an extra day, what better way than to repay his lovely wife by visiting a beer shop and bringing home a few nice beers? That's my logic at least.

I know there isn't as much craft available in Canada as the US, but Vancouver is a great foodie town. it MUST have a few things I don't have access to here (near nyc).

I'd love to hear which are the best breweries that distribute there, and what he should seek out. Or a centrally-located brew shop with a good selection.
    thanks,
    greedy BA wife :stuck_out_tongue:

I gave my husband a similar task last time he went on a business trip -- good thinkin'! Hope you get some tasty brews!

Maybe needs to be moved to Canada forum?

Breweries to grab bottles of would include: Driftwood, Parallel 49, Central City, Howe Sound, Lighthouse, Russell (Hop Therapy & Blood Alley are excellent).

ha, I didn't even realize there was a Canada forum! yeah, probably should. I thought the regional stuff was only continental US.

No doubt! BC is ripe with good breweries and beers. You will wish you had a bigger suitcase :grinning:

gotta plot carefully. My husband enjoys an occasional beer, but has also declared a "crusade" against "my religion" (beerology) He definitely won't bring home more than 3-4 bottles.

This is so weird as it's usually the other way around, at least for me!

Check with Rutager, he knows his stuff (i think :stuck_out_tongue: )
Seriously, i don't know what's available right now bur if you only have 3-4, make 'em count!

Canada actually has a huge amount of great breweries, check out Phillips for sure, they do a double IPA called Amnesiac and it's fabulous; their other beers are great too. Check out the Alibi Room, a craft beer with around 50 beers on tap from all over. Also St. Augustine's is a really good beer bar too.

Also there's a new brewery called Powell that's been winning awards, haven't had a chance to try any of their stuff yet but they're called Powell Street brewery.

I'm afraid he's a little cut off if he's staying on Campus. There's probably a beer and wine store around, but nothing that's very focused on craft unless you can get him to hop on a bus for a while.

He has a day off in which he likely will take a bus to somewhere central... so if there's a good shop near someplace fun, I could convince him.....

If nothing else, have him bring you a bottle of Driftwood's Fat Tug IPA. Should be available at pretty much every single Liquor Store for about $5.

Great time to be in Vancouver - spring sun finally here! (just not today - stupid rain).

For beer stores try the following (in order of my personal preference):

16th Street. This is in West Vancouver (across Lions Gate Bridge) about 10-15 min drive from downtown but may be a bit too far for you to go. Chris the owner is a great guy and carries a great selection of BC, Belgian and US beers.

Brewery Creek. This is on main street - also about a 10-15 min drive from downtown and probably much easier to get to. Generally considered the best beer store in Vancouver. It can be hard to find BC seasonal releases due to its popularity.

You can also find a very good selection in most provincial government stores - there are a few in the UBC area. Selection of seasonals doesn't compare to the above private stores but you will find a lot of Driftwood, Central City etc there.

I would seek out Driftwood (anything!), Lighthouse (Belgian Black and Red Siren if you can find them), Central City (Red Racer IPA), Howe Sound (most of their line) and Parallel 49 (anything but especially Hopnotist).

Parallel 49 is a new micro brewery that has been putting out good beer. You can go to the brewery. If there also drop by Powel Street (as noted above) that is about a block away and is a new nano brewery.

Depending on when he arrives there may be as many as 7 new micro breweries which are all opening in the next weeks.
