So over the past month or two I have encountered 2 beers of my new favorite style. Cascade Sang Noir The Bruery Melange #1 Each of these brews are a combination of sweet (Bourbon Barreling) and Sour (Lacto/Brett) and blew me away. When reading Sang Noir I was on the fence about just tossing two styles like that together and hoping for it to work but those brewers showed me. So my question is this: What other brew fit into this category and do they all turn out so well?
I had a hyper local one that fit from Triangle Brewing Co in Durham, NC. They brewed a Dubbel. Then they open fermented it with sour stuff, then aged it in Jim Beam barrels. It worked out phenomenally.
The Livery has a few beers that come to mind. Dopplebock+coffee+sour bourbon barrel= I wish I had more.
Tart of darkness was a solid sour stout, but my flavor of the month is that sweet & sour combination you get from a good souring with Lacto and possibly adding some fruits and then aging it in oak/bourbon barrels. Tart of Darkness was more a sour and bitter ( or at least I didn't get any sweetness). I actually tried the ToD at the same time I had Melange 1. The two were my favorites from about a 15 beer tasting. I am traveling to the midwest next week so I will have to look around the shops out there to see if I find some similar styles. Edit: I will glady trade ToD for Sang Noirs if anyone has them
it was a one off, and I brought a growler a home. The local brewers loved me when I brought that growler over.
