Just had Cigar City Good Gourd for the first time this year and think its great. Has anyone cellared a bottle or more to do a multi year vertical? How does it hold up?

My guess is that its best fresh but curious to hear from others that know for sure.

I wouldn't risk it. That's a delicate beer, age might induce some weirdness in it.

I've had it fresh and about 6m later and it was a completely different beer. Fresh is like pumpkin pie with cool whip; aged, not so much. I vote drink it now

I had the latest release the other weekend it blew me away. I cant see age helping it one bit. I'd say drink it on Turkeyday.

Sorry to renew an old thread, but does this apply to other high abv pumpkin beers as well? I was gifted a bottle of Good Gourd from last year and am debating holding onto it another couple months vs drinking it now.

I'd like to drink the Good Gourd as a pumpkin tasting, along with Pumpkinator (and the BA variant), Pumking, Smashed Pumpkin, Rumpkin, and Dark o the Moon, all of these from 2013. I'm starting to worry that I'm doing them all a disservice to wait until fall, but all things equal that'd be my preference vs drinking these on a 90 degree day.

good call @MikeDAdams, let me know what you find @Infinite1!

For real though, I'm curious if anyone has experience with any of these specific beers at a year old. Obviously "fresh" is no longer an option, I'm just trying to figure out if 12 months will be in any way worse than at 9?

Drink it, it's only going to get worse.
Now if you had GG Almighty that would be a different story.

I've had Pumpkinator at 1 & 2 years old. Was falling off at 2 years (but not bad), 1 year was the best (smooth), & fresh is still great. I found a random Pumpking in the back of the fridge the other day, so planning on doing a side by side myself in the fall.

Report back when you do your tasting - I'm curious myself.

"in the fall" doesn't have to wait much, Pumking is already on shelves in my area. Whenever I do my tasting I'll let you know, but the event I was asking about for this week fell through.

I had this discussion with many folks last fall and was very surprised to hear most of them preferred GG with a year on it. I try not aging anything <8% so this went against my better judgement but I decided to cellar a couple last year just to see. When 2014 GG comes out I'll be doing a side by side with the guys in my local tasting group and will post the results here.

Thanks for the input!! I'm very glad to hear that there is a school of thought that prefers some age on it, even if I don't wait until Halloween/November, I will probably at least hold off until it is officially "Fall" in September. I'll have a pumpkin beer here or there in the Spring/Summer, but to do a whole tasting of them seems odd.

I've got a bottle that was just recently traded to me as part of a package. Curious as to how you feel this would fare differently from the base beer

I liked it better than the original because it's boozy. I'd imagine it would hold up better since the rum flavor would make up for the fading spices.

Cool. Not a big fan of overwhelming spices anyway
