Good Intro Sours?

    Thanks for all the recommendations, I'll keep my eyes out. Hitting Prison City tomorrow for brunch, they've usually got a few on tap that my wife will try. She definitely has the more refined palate of the two of us.

    Flanders: Rodenbach or Duchess de Bourgone
    Gueuze: Lindemans Cuvee Rene, Boon Marriage Parfait
    American: Wicked Weed has a bunch of good ones where I am, Tart of Darkness is phenomenal IMO
    Gose: Anderson Valley Blood Orange.

    This is about as good a recommendation across the sour styles as I've seen. Go with ljdrinkersbeer says and you'll be fine and won't break your wallet too bad either.

    I'd stay away from acetic ones that people are recommending if you have trouble with vinegar. Those in the Flanders red or brown family would be tough (Rodenbach, La Folie, Duchesse de Bourgogne).

    As a guy that isn't really into sours, I can say that Beatnik from Exile is very drinkable.

    I would highly recommend Rodenbach Grand Cru as an intro to sours. It was my first sour beer and is what got me into sours.

    I agree that the different Gose variations from Anderson Valley are a good introduction to beer that have some sour characteristics and that won't overwhelm the palate of someone who isn't initiated/used to sour beers.

    I don't know if it's easy to get in Canada, but Boon marriage parfait is an excellent geuze that's well balanced and not overly sour.

    Bell's Oarsman. Easy to forget, but this slightly sour beer was definitely my way in. Reasonably priced as well.

    I enjoy brett IPA's, but these are not inherently sour.

    Brett produces the 'funk,' but the sourness comes from lacto and pedio bacteria, which may very well not be in the beer you're talking about.

    Sure, but many "Brett ipa" also have other wild strains and many are slightly sour. I've had many that are labeled as "Brett ipa" that have sour qualities, some very mild, some very sour. Also, even if they are not in the least bit sour but just have that typical Brett funk, it is still a good stepping stone to that funk which is common in many sours that use Brett as one of their strains. So as an intro to sours for someone who usually drinks IPA, a Brett ipa is certainly a great gateway. There is no doubt about that whatsoever. Not sure what point you are trying to make.

    The point I am trying to make is pretty clear, I think.

    I'm just pointing out that while these 2 (the brett yeast, and the lacto/pedio bacteria) are often found together, that someone (not yourself, but someone trying to research this) should not interpret them as being interchangeable. Its something I'm glad I found out about along the way, and find interesting.

    Someone like OP could very well be thinking about a brett IPA when framing this question. But maybe they're thinking of something along the lines of a gose, lambic, flanders, etc.

    Simply put. Brett = Funk. Lacto/ Pedio = Sour.
    This is a Good Intro to "Sour" thread

    I would recommend brett ipa for someone looking for an intro to "WILDS" that are also hop heads.
    I would recommend some one that are looking for "SOURS" I say Rodebcach Grand Cru, BOON gueze, Destihl here goes nothin, westbrook, anderson valley gose, Crooked stave Vielle or Surette, Evil twin Nomader Weise, 1809 weisse.

    Best recommendation is try as many as you can across the board on styles. Gose, Lambic, Flanders, Flemish, Gueze, Berliner Weisse, American Wild.
