Not a huge sour and or funk guy, but New Glarus has been a revelation. Even if it's a baby step.

Since you are in Illinois you can just jump right into some badass sours by trading Zombie Dust and Dark Lord for some Russian River Supplication or Firestone Walker Brette Rosé. :grimacing:

Kasteel Bacchus was my first sour. Not bad at all for a beginner sour. Don't know if it is technically a sour but you could try Anderson Valley's Gose.

My vote is for Prarie Standard, a farmhouse I know but it's a nice intro to farmhouse as well as a sour, but I'm a big advocate to drink to what style you like.

Weyerbacher tarte nouveau is a nice easy one to go with. That or most goses.

Duchesse, Rodenbach, Cuvee De Jacobins Rouge, Monks Cafe, Victory Sour Monkey, Victory Kirsch Gose... any Gose. Supplication wasn't overly sour, but I would stay away from Consecration early on. Lambic took me some time, but now I'm in love with it. Wild saison's with age are wonderfull.

Mariage Parfait is a great intro gueuze IMO. A bit of sour and funk but not overpowering on either. Relatively affordable and available as well.

If I could vote against Duchess a million times, I would. I would never drink another sour if I thought they tasted anything like that.

Desthil has a number of good sours and they are pretty easy to get and reasonably priced. You can find Avery's Liliko'i Kepolo locally, New Holland's Inccorrigable is a nice Berliner Weissbeer and pretty easy to drink, and if you can find your way north to Wisconsin, New Glarus has some pretty good ones.

My first and so far only sour beer was Petrus Oud Bruin, and I thought that was really good -- there was definitely sourness in there, but there were also definitely other flavors going on besides "sour" and it wasn't even close to overwhelming levels of sourness even though I'd never had a sour beer before. So I would definitely recommend that one or something along the same lines.

I noticed the Petrus Aged Pale was already mentioned previously; haven't gotten around to trying that one yet, but I do plan on it if they still have some at the local beer/wine store the next time I drop by.

Dogfish Festina Peche or Bells Oarsman, neither are really sour just a little tart with the Bells being quite mild

Rodenbach Grand Cru: This is the first "sour" I ever had and it was eye opening. They're always on the shelf at Binnys.
    Anderson Valley Gose and variants

I am an avid sour fan, so a lot of what i think may not be what you are into, however to be honest Timmermans Pumpkin Lambicus is pretty decent for beginners, I still like it!
