i've drank a lot of stouts but none have been sweet enough (like milkshake or cake) for me to call a pastry stout. i'm definitely curious though.

there's a lot of hype around many whale pastry stouts, but are there any good ones that hit distribution for pick up in beer cellars?

Southern tier does a lot of very sweet stouts. Their creme brulee is supposed to be quite sweet. I enjoyed their choklat imp stout. It reminded me of chocolate pudding.

Southern Tier is a good recommendation. I really like Choklat, Choklat Oranj and what used to be Mokah (I don’t remember if they started making this again or not). Creme Brûlée however was simply undrinkable for me. Super duper sweet, which may be what you want.

Evil Twin makes a lot of sweet stouts and porters. They distribute widely, including MO. Enjoy!

Not sure if you get either of these, but Mikkeller,
Evil Twin and Omnipollo come to mind as well. Only Evil Twin is listed on seekabrew and it shows full distribution to MO. Not sure about the other two.

Creme brulee tastes like a diacetyl tire fire. It's sweet for sure though

Avery Tweak is very sweet and should be available in Missouri.

Good recommendation - Southern Tier has been doing "pastry stouts" since long before that term became a thing.
That description made my night. :joy::joy:

There should be an ISU rating for pastry beers, International Sweetness Unit. Sour needs one too, perhaps IPU, International Pucker Unit.

I had an Irish-ish Coffee Stout from Evil Twin the other day that was pretty good.

A lot of the Souther Tier stouts I think fit the bill also.

This is actually a good idea. Black Heath Meadery lists their residual sugar % for each mead in the taproom, not sure about bottles though

Evil Twin Even More Pecan Pie Jesus and Even More Cocoa Jesus are good shout-outs, but they do have a lot of underlying bitterness and smokiness from the base Even More Jesus. I think those Danish/Scandinavian stouts just have too much of that dark fruit, hoppy, smoky Russian Imperial lineage in them to qualify as "pastry stouts." I even found Omnipollo's NOA Pecan Mud Cake to have that bitterness, though it's probably the closest to a true pastry stout of the ones that see distro.

There just aren't a lot of them seeing distribution, but like others have said, I suppose Mikkeller, Evil Twin, and Omnipollo are your best bets, even if I personally don't think they're quite the same as the Angry Chair/J. Wakefield/More's of the world (and I don't just mean in perceived quality or anything).

One beer, Noa Pecan Mud Cake Stout by Omnipollo. Found it at a bunch of bottleshops down here in SoCaL, guessing it might be at your local one?

Tried Samoa This yesterday and it was EASILY the worst non-infected beer that I've had in many, many years. Absolutely struggled to finish the glass. Tasted like I was drinking a glass full of Hawaiian Tropic.

I have no clue how their beers garner any hype at all. The best beers I have had from them have been Warlock and pumking, and even those are simply mediocre.
