A really good one that is readily available in California is Lagunitas Imperial Stout.

The correct answer is: ALL OF THEM? Though I would say most of my recommendations favor the stout side:

Samuel Smith - any of their stouts/porters are fantastic; look for the Organic Chocolate Stout and the Imperial Stout (IMO it's underrated among RIS)

Stone - IRS (a bit of age smooths out some of the heat that you get from a fresh bottle)

Bell's - Special Double Cream Stout (super roasty/super creamy), Kalamazoo (a lighter stout with nice light roast and chocolate notes), Expedition (superb RIS, even better with age)

Founder's - KBS (BBA stout, sublime), FBS (bold, coffee/roast forward)

Great Divide - any of the Yetis (but particularly the Oak Aged Yeti = winning!)

Southern Tier - Choklat (best non-barrel aged imperial stout there is in my book, especially if you like chocolate aroma/flavor in your stout), 2x Stout (a nice, robust sweet stout)

Brooklyn - Black Chocolate Stout (RIS with big dark chocolate presence)

Rogue - Chocolate Stout (like drinking a milk chocolate milkshake)

Sam Adams - Cream stout (I would argue the best year-round availability beer that Boston Beer Co. produces)

Oskar Blues - Ten FIDY (a bold, flavorful RIS in a can, doesn't get much better than that!)

If you get evil twin distribution lil b imperial porter and i love you with my stout are both really good, high abv tho. And I've been seeing lots of Uinta Sea Legs Baltic porter on Draft in my area, it's pretty tasty and barrel aged but the barrel flavor is pretty mild.

I'm a huge fan of Lil B from Evil Twin. Totally caught me off guard. It's an imperial porter with outstanding flavor. People's Porter from Foothills is also great. Big Jamoke from Marshall Brewing company is also outstanding. It is more of a stout than a porter, but still very delicious (not distributed in California).

My top 4 ‘regular’ (i.e., non-imperial) Stouts/Porters are: Hill Farmstead Everett, Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Founders Porter and Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter.

Other noteworthy Porters/Stouts: Sam Adams Cream Stout, Bell’s Porter,…

    Cheers!

This thread could go into hundreds of pages long, it's all subjective like any beer category, but I'll throw in my two-cents worth:

Terrapin Liquid Bliss Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter
    Left Hand NITRO Milk Stout
    Samuel Smith Chocolate Stout
    Terrapin Wake N' Bake
    Oskar Blues Ten Fidy
    Schlafly Oatmeal Stout
    Southern Tier Warlock Pumpkin Stout
    Rogue Double Chocolate Stout

The list could go on and on, but those are the ones that strike me right away as just a few of my favorites. I'm not sure what you get out there, but if you can at least get your hands on Ten Fidy Imperial Stout, Left Hand NITRO Milk Stout, and Samuel Smith Chocolate Stout, that'll get you a good variety of different stouts. If you want more suggestions, message me and I'll send you a whole list.

Green Flash Double Stout is fantastic. I would also highly recommend Steelhead Extra Stout and Sierra Nevada's Stout

Im told if you blend bud light with purred cat poop and bury it in the ground for 57 years you may have a tasty stout.
    Its just speculation though...

I came here to say something along the lines of Victory at Sea, Black Butte, Speedway, etc., but to throw something out there that hasn't been mentioned: Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is quite delicious!
