I’m not sure about always available. I do not believe there to be much hype behind , so even if it’s a seasonal release finding it shouldn’t be very difficult .

I just checked BeerMenus and I show 7 places near me that have it.

Cycle does online sales and will ship to you. Looks like the next sale is at the end of this month. Not sure if it'll be anything rum barrel aged, but worth looking into. Oh, and I'm a big fan of Pirate Noir. In IL at least, Prairie BA stuff isn't easy to find. Good luck with your hunt!

Wow that's good to know they ship and it seems that the prices to do so are pretty fair. I wonder why other places don't ship like that. Hopefully that have something of interest on the next release!

Whats your take on aging rum ba beers in general? I dont dig them as much as bourbon BA as it seems when rum BA beers are hot they are intolerable unlike bourbon. A real hard barrel ive found to nail in a beer without adjuncts to back up the rumminess.

A good question, and I don't have a lot of experience on the matter, but will share what I've been told.

When Deschutes released their rum version of Abyss, I of course ran over to try it on tap over at the pdx pub, like any sensible person. The bar tender told me he thought it was delicious, but also pretty hot. I thought he was right on both counts, and did indeed find the beer to be pretty boozy. The bartender advised me that the brewer had indicated the heat should subside pretty quickly, but even so, he thought it a good idea to lay it down for maybe a year. Based on our conversation, I got the impression that Deschutes felt the beer would definitely improve with some short term aging, assuming you enjoyed rum flavors in your stout, and enjoyed the beer when young.

I haven't personally tried it again since that time, so I can't corroborate his opinion. That being said, it's become pretty hard to find rum variants of the abyss around town (unlike some of the other variants), which tends to make think what I was told maybe accurate. I do know a beer bar in town that still has some bottles at the original release price, so maybe I'll run over tomorrow and see.

Actually since you bring it up.... generally speaking I typically like Rum BA beers better fresh. It seems to loose something with age maybe some of the sweetness of the rum? Not sure what it is. Rum king in general doesn’t age well for some reason especially since they went to cans.

I second and third Pirate Noir and Pirate Bomb. They were last distributed January 2018, so could be back late this year or early next year. They're drinking pretty good yet, just had some recently. If you drink a Pirate Bomb/Noir with less than 6 months age on it, you may as well just slam it. One of the rare cases of a beer actually improving with age, but it's all subjective. I buy a case of these when I find them.

As far as Odell Jolly Russian, it's not quite as good as Pirate Bomb/Noir IMHO, a bit weaker on the rum. It is on the shelves now, at least here.

Boulevard also has one, but I think it's only been in a sampler lately. Similar to Jolly Russian.

The CW Rum Coconut Porter is pretty good, as are most of their BA lineup.

What bar is that if you don't mind sharing? I have family in Portland and if it's not too far I may be able to get a few bottles to try.

Bailey's. In fact, I think their annual bottle sale event is either next week or the next. So you might even be able to get it at a discount.

Yeah I've dealt with some that were really hot and needed time to mellow

But there's been just as many that were great fresh

Had a can of magnify “Running Out of Daylight” and was pleasantly surprised by the rum barrels. Normally something I avoid but in this case worked with the adjuncts wonderfully!

Having had a bottle of Rum Abyss here in the last 2 months, I can say it was very mellow and reminiscent of regular Abyss with a kiss of rum. A good beer by all means but not very Rum forward after aging.

I had a can that was over a year old and thought it was quite delicious. Unless you're talking multiple years...
