Just picked up a 3rd year beer at Evanston 1st Liquors. They have plenty left, though while their sticker price of 17.99 wasn't bad, evanston apparently has its own liquor tax so I ended up paying north of 20 bucks after all was said and done.

Sounds amazing. We havent started getting Ballast Point yet but I picked up a regular VaS down south, can't wait to open it up!

More brewers should do this. I know bourbon is probably the easiest spirit barrel to get, but I bet there's a whole mess of used rum barrels for cheap down in the Caribbean.

Indeed Brewing up here in Minneapolis is currently aging an imperial stout in rum barrels for release this fall.

Rum barrels can be reused by distillers, which results in a more limited supply. Shipping them from the Caribbean is also significantly more costly than loading a truck in Kentucky - a lot of the rum barrel beers actually use American-made rums (or even in-house ones, like New Holland, Rogue, Ballast Point, etc.)

I've also casually observed that a higher percentage of rum barrel-aged beers tend to be infected. I'm not sure if there's a specific reason for this (tropical climates? use of sugar cane/molasses? re-use of barrels?) or whether it's merely due to the small sample size, but Avery, Captain Lawrence, Jackie O's, and Cigar City have all had off beers. Avery used Gosling's from Bermuda, Captain Lawrence used Rogue, and I'm not sure about the other two.

Midnight Sun Rumbah was also infected, but it was a 'pirated' second-use bourbon barrel that was re-hydrated with rum.

Rum Barrel Aged 4 Elf from Dark Horse was very good, but not one that I've seen more that the only time I've had it. Can't say I've come across any others.

You would think so, but not really. Avery had a really hard time finding enough barrels to do rumpkin this year, and if anyone noticed it was released pretty late because of it.

Rarer dos was very good; not a big fan of CL rum barrel smoke from the oak. Flavors didn't hang together very nicely for my tastes.

Underwhelming!? Maybe it's just me because Innis & Gunn doesn't get much love but I adore their rum barrel beer. As well as their whiskey barrel aged beer

The only ones I have had are the afore mentioned Innis and Gunn and then Mikkeller had a Rum Black Hole stout. Both were just ok for me.

Chicago folks are generally the folks you find selling DLD tix, KBS tix, and other general hoard and gouge dickish practices as well.
