I'm buying a couple bottles as a gift for a friend, and he's really into sours. Problem is I don't know anything about sours. Anyone have any recommendations for some top notch sours that would be available in Madison?

If you can find any from New Glarus, buy my friend, buy.

Yeah, he's had the Oud Bruin, and I don't really have time to go stand in line on Friday for the peach one.

The 3 Sheeps Nimble Lips Noble Tongue vol 2 is their first foray into sours and is pretty tasty, also reasonably priced at ~$10 for a bomber.

New Holland Incorrigible might be around at some places too. It's closer to a Berliner Weiss than a straight wild sour but it is great for the price, usually right around $6 or less.

Otherwise there are the Goose Island "Sisters", Lolita (raspberry) might still be around at some places ~$17, and Halia (peach) for ~$21.

Also of note is Oso Winds of Change and Restless Soul. Neither are full blown sours but they have brettanomyces and are decent brews. Might be just a touch pricey for ~$14 each.

If you can still find New Holland Incorrigible, he will enjoy it. If you have money to burn, go to Jennifer St. Market. Once in the cooler look on the shelves holding the bombers. They have a bunch of nice (expensive) sours from all over the country, Jolly Pumpkin, Cisco brewers Cranberry in the Wood, and others.

I think he will find it...lacking...That beer has so much potential, they just need to up the intensity.

Perhaps, but I do appreciate the effort they made.

I had the first batch, so I wonder if the second attempt made it any better? Not spending the $8 to find out, but maybe some reviewers will.

Thanks for the recs so far guys. I as at Riley's earlier today for a personal beer run, and I didn't see much in the way of domestic sours (maybe I just didn't know what I was looking at). Any good imports of note?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, just not enough to spend another $8. I'll be interested to know if it is different in any way.

Bruery and Goose Island probably have the best shelf sours in WI. There are all sorts of decent ones, but those 2 breweries will have the "punch you in the face sour" quality.

Rodenbach Caractère Rouge is still all over Milwaukee. At the grocery stores even. $22/750ml is a little spendy, but well worth it for this beer IMO.

This. GI's Madame Rose is tart as hell. All the Bruery sours are available here, sadly no stouts:slight_frown:

I had a bad experience with this one last week. It was barely sour and had a metallic/chemical aftertaste. It did have a nice berry flavor, but it was just a straight up bad sour. In my opinion, all the Rodenbach "sours" are mediocre at best.

Sucks for you I guess. I've never had a single problem with any Rodenbach beers. Grand Cru at $10 is generally a steal.

EDIT: Rodenbach Grand Cru: 99/92 on RateBeer, and 95 here on BA.

I just think they are hyped up to be these amazingly tart sours, but in reality they aren't. Compared to the stuff that Bruery and GI make, Rodenbach is childs play. Hopefully my experience with Rouge isn't typical, but I'm sure not going to blow another $22 to chance it on another one.
