I've been drinking a lot of Bourbon County, KBS and Black Note lately - all fantastic stuff. But I cracked open a bomber of 2012 Sofie yesterday after a long day of bike riding and yard work and I must say, it was as good as anything I've had in ages. It was getting funked up, a little fruity, a little spicy and a whole lot of yummy! It's really good fresh but I think it becomes spectacular with some age on it.

I agree it's a great beer although I tend to favor the stouts like you had been drinking. It will definitely develop in the bottle as does lolita which is a personal favorite of mind from that range of goose islands.

Great to hear. I normally can't keep it that long as I tend to drink it when fresh.

I personally love to age Matilda too, the brett really pops in that one after a year or so.

Personally I think Sofie with 2 years on it is superior to all the Goose Island Belgian lineup except Halia (and possibly Gillian, which I haven't had). Juliet, Lolita, Madam Rose, Matilda, Pepe Nero, Pere Jacques....nope. Mind you I'm a bit of a **** for saisons with brett and minimal hopping, so I may be a bit biased, but still.

Oh and word of warning to the uninitiated: like fresh Juliet, Sofie needs to be handled with care after a few years of aging. She gets to be a bit of a squirter once she comes into her own, if you get my drift. Definitely keep a towel nearby.

I prefer Sophie fresh, it gets too carbonated as it ages. Pere Jacques though, that beer goes to another level after a year or more.

I think fresh Sophie is the best of the lineup though, and in general one of the best American beers, period. Its a great example of an incredible, easy to get beer that makes you wonder why you spend so much energy searching out rare beers when there is stuff like this on the shelf everywhere.

3 year old Sofie is the bees knees. Just sayin.
