The other weekend I found a few cans of "Westbrook Gose" at a local store in NY. I immediately fell in love with the style, and think it is a great beer for summer. Unfortunately, Westbrook Gose is rarely found in stores where I am. I was hoping for some suggestions of more readily available Gose that I should keep an eye out for?

Also I couldn't help but feel like this style was very similar to a Berliner Weisse. Can anyone explain the difference to me?

    Cheers.
    Mike

I have not had many of either style but Westbrook's Gose is the best I've had, not sure if you can find better in the US. As for Berliner's, New Glarus is great and I was blown away by Fritz Briem's Berliner as well. Not sure how available any of those are by you.

Rapp Brewing in Seminole, FL makes a Gose that is better than Westbrook's. Great stuff!

I havent had too many of either one but I would say Berliner's can be very sour while Gose overall are easy to drink.

Uh oh, the Gose and Berliner Weisse police are gonna chime in and tell us we can't be enjoying these beers because they aren't made in any of the 2,914 different traditional German ways to make them.

JK. (or am I?) OP, Westbrook Gose is delicious and I believe the Remarkable Liquids guy said that they will be better distro in our state soon. Right now I can't get it at all (Mid Hud Valley) without an hour+ trip south or north, at least you get it occasionally. They just reported that the next batch is on the way to stores in NY. AFAIK there are no other American Gose made and distro to either of our areas of the state.

Not sure where in New York you are, but Druthers Brewing in Saratoga Springs just won Gold at the World Beer Cup for their gose. Apparently they changed the recipe a bit, but I had it before the change and thought it was damn good.

Another round of Gose should be hitting NYC soon. Though I know Bed-Stuy Beer Works had a couple sixers left last time I was there.

Off Color Troublesome is a very tasty Gose, but it gets expensive outside of Chicago ($16-$17 for a sixer by the time it gets to Ohio). I heard somewhere that they were using an importer to distribute outside of the area.

Some excellent info in this thread about Berliner Weisse: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/1885-article-on-berliner-weisse.177906/ While I was grateful to learn about the history of brewing it in the 19th century, I was perhaps even more pleased to learn that Schell's in MN is brewing their Berliner in the most traditional way possible (given their equipment and process constraints). Haven't tried theirs yet, but got an offer from the brewer -- who has dedicated a lot of time, energy, and passion learning about how to brew traditionally while in Germany -- to get a behind-the-scenes look (and taste!) when I come visit. (Kinda ironic that the BA wanted to shut Schell's out of the "craft" family, and they are one of the only ones going the extra mile to craft these beers the way they were intended...speaks volumes IMO.)

I send an email to founders at least once a month demanding they make this style!

That would be cool. Its so strange that its such a hard to find style, given how its the perfect summer beer.

Gose is fantastic, and so is Berliner. If they were a little less expensive they would be my everyday drinking beers

yup. 12% is the importer/distributor (both Westbrook and Off Color). Their wholesale prices are pretty high on rare stuff... but Westbrook Gose doesn't really fall in that category. Troublesome however, does.

Westbrook's Gose has opened my eyes to a whole new style and it's going to be tough for anyone to top them. I went down to their taproom today and some of the variants they have (Gozu Time Triplicate and Gose Gone Wild) are simply mind blowing.

There are lots of great Berliners out there though; one of my recently discovered favorite is Ten Minutes of Pleasure by Trinity Brewing Co in Colorado Springs.

Anderson Valley makes a great gose, I could drink them by the case. Its surprising to me that this style is not more popular, I think it will become big in the future.

I dug the Westbrook Gose and heartily recommend it to anyone interested in trying the style. Today I had an "authentic" German Gose, which had never shown up in my stores before, and I'd also heartily recommend...

    Ritterguts Gose from Hartmannsdorf, Germany

If you liked Westbrook's take, you're gonna like this even though it has some subtle differences: slightly milder salinity and tartness - muted if you will, and with what I've heard described as a more lactic element, meaning smoother and creamier (although these are relative terms) - the beer was tart and crisp, refreshing and light. There was more of an herbal element to the Ritterguts, too - again, subdued and well-integrated; whereas Westbrook's take is more of a 1-2 punch of tartness and salt, the Ritterguts seemed more rounded and smooth.
