Can't be too fresh...unless they are growing Citras in the Southern Hemisphere somewhere. (or there was an early harvest...were they wet/fresh?)
congrats dude. let us know what you end up using them for and i agree completely. tons of douchebags on BA lately. most of them aren't old either they're usually kids who just turned 21 (lol i'm 25 and here i am calling these BA kids). i really don't get it. if you don't have anything good or helpful to say don't say anything at all.
I haven't seen 2012 Citra available. As far as I know, it's not been harvested. I have some 2011 in my freezer, and have it at my local store too. Amarillo has been harvested in some places though. I have a pound of Amarillo, 12 oz of Cascade and 12 oz of Magnum whole leaf coming this week from the 2012 crop. I'll be grabbing some Centennial, Citra and Simcoe when I can get them all at once. Centennial is ready, but the other two aren't available yet. Gonna try to go the whole leaf route for some beers this year and see if it changes anything up in the boil.
This is all I was trying to say...oops, forgot the smiley face to preclude alleged "snarky" comments. For the record: I'm a young 58 : )
Just looked at rebel brewer.. Doesn't say if any of it's 2012 crop.. Appears to all be last years, which... there's nothing wrong with that.. but it's not "fresh"... Doesn't matter as it's all sealed and purged and dried and all that shit. And at $2.99.. thats high, especially for internet sales. $3.99 for pellets is a RIP OFF too.. Thank God my LHBS is a reasonable guy who just loves to make beer.. I pay $2.19 for whole leaf and 1.99 for pellets of Citra.. It's one of the more expensive ones too.
It will have lost potency. The debate would be whether or not it lost enough to be significant. Properly packaged and stored, I wouldn't worry about year old hops too much, but I'd use 2012 if they were available.
Sorry got excited- they are the first Citra I could ever find to be shipped to FL, and they smell fresh and amazing. So I thought they were fresh from the fields. Either way, brewing our Double Citra IPA tomorrow.
http://www.farmhousebrewingsupply.com/scripts/hopsList.asp?idCategory=21 4 oz limit, 2011 crop, but reasonable with usps shipping added bonus...they have Simcoes also Good luck on the DIPA
That is where I got a pound of Nelson's recently. Pretty happy with the price and the hops- they were packaged well and were very fresh, 2012 of course!
