Driving to Grand Haven this week and was wondering if anyone knew if the Grand Rapids Costco or area Meijer stores have a decent selection? Both stores seem to be hit or miss depending on location. So I didn't know if anyone had insight before i take the time to stop. For costco Specifically the 28th St location. Going to hit a bottle shop or two as well which can be hit or miss on price, but it seems like some people find good stuff at certain costcos with crazy good prices. Thanks,
Cascade Meijer at 28th and Kraft is the King Daddy when it comes to craft beer at a grocery store. Not sure about Costco. The one in Grandville used to be okay and had a decent selection of bombers. Now they've done away with all that and only have a crappy selection of bulk 24 packs. About the only thing interesting there right now is the Sierra Nevada High Altitude pack (29.99 for 4 bombers, one of which is BA Bigfoot) and Dragon's Milk bombers for 6.29 ea. I haven't been into the other Costco in years.
Thanks. Seems to be the trend with costcos. some might have a great selection, or did and have phased it out (oddly as craft got bigger...) The cascade meijer is a very doable stop. Lansing seems to get neglected on some things, so i'll probably stop in and see what we're missing.
I have only beer to the Costco on 28th St. once 3-4 years ago to buy a bottle of Utopias and have not been back there since then. If they can get Utopias, they must have something good going for them. However, I don't recall an extensive selection of other stuff back then, so the Utopias offering may have been an anomaly. And maybe they've changed too like @Tracker83 said above.
I'm a huge Costco fanboy and hit up the 28th st location weekly (I'm enjoying a fine Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich from there as I type this) and typically buy at least one bottle while I'm there. Sometimes you get lucky and find something on the rarer side (Bourbon County on black Friday, No Rules, stuff like that) but more often than not you find something of quality at a solid price. Sophie bomber for $6, 22oz Neapolitan Stout for $3.50, etc. I would say stop in but have tempered expectations. Cascade Meijer is definitely worth a stop. David Stanley is the beer steward there and is as knowledgable as he is friendly. Cheers!
Thanks guys. Looks like I am leaving tonight instead of tomorrow morning so I'll be stopping in. I'll hit Rishis if there is enough time too. Originally I was going to be coming through before Rishi was open, but now that I switched to tonight I can stop.
