On my last few brews I’ve used 2 row as my main grain, on my next brew I would like to use a mix of 2 row and golden promise ... would a 50/50 mix be best or should I go heavier on one or the other . I know it’s all about experimenting and personal preference. Just curious what other think

I'd say "need more information." What style of beer are you brewing and what other malts and percentages are you planning to use?

As was discussed above do you have a beer style(s) in mind?

I have only brewed with Golden Promise malt once (100% for the base malt) and it had a pleasant sweetness aspect that I enjoyed in that specific batch. Having stated that I have not brewed using Golden Promise since that one time.

Maybe brew a batch using 100% Golden Promise as the base malt and see what you think about this malt? Needless to say by 'plain' 2-row malt is more flavor neutral and if you choose to brew a 50/50 batch you will essentially be 'diluting' the flavor contribution of the Golden Promise malt.

    Cheers!

    What @JackHorzempa says.

I am a proponent of SMASH beers. In this instance use a neutral yeast (-05), moderate IBUs to match FG from a balanced hop. And 100% Golden Promise.

It is the best way to get a sense of what this malt does, and maybe what it does not do for you.

    Cheers.

Golden Promise is my "house" base malt; I use it for everything. While it definitely has more character than plain old US 2-row, it's not that assertive. I'd say rebrew a recipe that you have previously brewed using only 2-row with 100% Golden Promise as base.

What quality(s) drives Golden Promise to be your "house" base malt? Is there any pale ale style where you prefer to use something other than Golden Promise as your base malt?

    Cheers!

I like the honey-like sweetness along with the slight biscuit quality. Neither is too assertive, though. It's somewhere between Pilsner and Marris Otter.

Other than flavor, good yield, good diastic power, fat kernels that are highly friable, and a light color.

I can't remember the last time I used something other than Golden Promise as my base. I've used it in all sorts of Belgians (ranging from Wits to Saisons to Belgian Pale), Hefeweizens, Kolsch, anything American or British, as well as darker styles where the base malt won't shine as much. I just really like the flavor, and I don't want to buy sacks of other base malt that I won't use as much.

I've used a few sacks of GP. Definatly sweeter than other base malts. I liked it best when I used it 50/50 with marris or best ale base malt. Less sweet.

I've gone though many sacks of GP.. I've mixed 50/50 with Briess 2-row, to use up the bag of Briess) and liked the results.

To be pedantic, GP is a 2 row variety. I like Simpsons GP the best.

Just thought of an instance when I would prefer to use something other than GP.

I use pretty much the same specialty malts for English Bitters and English IPA: .5# Medium English crystal (~45L-55L), .25# Dark English crystal (~75L-80L), .25# Amber malt. I just adjust GP amounts to get the gravity I want. Sipping on an English IPA that I brewed a few months ago and went a little heavy on hops on (same amounts as my American IPAs), and I think I would prefer to use Marris Otter just to make the malt pop a little bit more, but keep the hopping rate the same.
