I don't know much about it but I'm pretty sure I'd like one. Can anyone give me an idea of how many are out there and what it might take to trade for a bottle? Cheers!
Personal opinion, I wouldn't give up what it would take to get one at this point. The peppers are most likely fading, and even when it was "fresh" I didn't think it was anything special which was disappointing. Good luck.
Shane and i opened one together next to 2014 Huna (not barrel aged) and huna blew it out of the water. no barrel taste, nothing but green peppers. however some people have still said it tastes great, lots of barrel, etc.
Thanks for the feedback, fellas, though I'm bummed to hear the less than flattering reviews. Does the higher bottle count for the AB version imply that it might be easier to get ahold of?
I am actually confused because the release on 9/28/13 was only Apple Brandy GNVP. I do not know when, nor where, the non-barrel aged version was released. Perhaps someone else can chime in. I am thinking it stemmed from the March 2013 release but from what I can dig up it was not officially on any of the lists they published of bottles being released. March release information September release information
If you look at the reviews for the regular GNVP, people are commenting it was from a bottle pour while others were saying it was on draft for the March 2013 release. Much confused.
Regular gnvp was draft only and a lot of the reviews under gnvp are for the apple. Most of the threads on here referencing gnvp on here are the apple. The last bottle I tried of it was at a share over the summer and it held up very nicely. Much more pepper flavor and heat than the rest of the barrel aged Mexican stouts.
agreed. We opened one during a 4th of July share and this was near the top of everyone's list as most enjoyable.
I brought a AB GNVP to a share about a month ago, and I thought it was superb. The pepper heat wasn't intense, but it was certainly there, and the balance was pretty much where I'd have wanted it to be. I didn't hear any dissenting opinions from others at the share. I'd gladly repeat the trade I made for it. I wouldn't think, however, that there are very many bottles left out there, given that they were released over a year ago, and I'd expect the remaining ones to command a correspondingly high value.
I had it back in November, still a good amount of Apple Brandy, which I liked. But I thought the peppers were way too strong, reminded me of un-barreled Mexican Cake. Considering what it takes to get (I thankfully found a very generous BA), I'm not sure I'd go after it again. AB Black Magick and Caution Contains Real Pumpkins on the other hand...
Agreed, I thought the Apple Brandy was there, and, although it wasn't overwhelming, it nicely complemented the pepper. I'd had some trepidation, as the only other AB from Voodoo I'd had was a disastrous bottle of Gran Met that I tried at a share over the summer. I'm assuming something was wrong with that bottle, as it became more an more undrinkable over the hour or so that it was opened. I'm glad to hear that about the pumpkin bw; I'm bringing it to a bw-specific share at the end of the month and looking forward to trying it.
AB GNVP and Voodoo Caution are absolutely some of my favorites from each style.. IMO you can't go wrong seeking out either.. Also as mentioned above it would take a very nice bottle to land the AB GNVP and after just having it on tap this past weekend it would be almost impossible for me to give one up! It's that good!
I agree with your assessment. I absolutely adored it- had it on tap at the Voodoo Homestead opening last weekend. The peppers were still pretty intense, but the apple brandy wasn't as strong as I figured it would be. Still there, but muted a bit. Still a fantastic beer. Caution is lights out good too.
