So I saw this: http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2012/03/new-beer-stiegl-grapefruit-radler-bottled-shandy.html yesterday and got to wondering. I went to one of my local bars and had the bartender make one with Chuckanut Pilsner and Squirt. Then I tried one with the Pilsner and Sierra Mist. I thought the Lemon-lime kind of overpowered the beer, but using less 7-Up might fix that (we used a 50-50 mix for each). the grapefruit one was surprisingly crisp and refreshing, and fairly well balanced. I can see drinking a few of these in the summer.
That sounds sweet (I love grapefruit). I wonder what beer mixed with grapefruit juice would taste like...
I don't support this endeavor, but: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/290/41091 This seems to be a popular one in Heidelberg.
Sounds great to me. I drank a lot of lemonade Radlers in Munich last year and I think Grapefruit sparkling soda would be even better.
Shiner made a summer seasonal last year called Ruby Red that had a tremendous grapefruit flavor. It was absolutely delicious, and I sure as heck hope they bring it back this summer - we need SOME kind of heat relief here in Texas.
If its meant to be brewed that way I am okay with it. Mixing things with my beers doesnt work for me. Cheers!
Yeah, I tried that, didn't particularly care for it. I that it was kind of bland and that the grapefruit had more of a presence than the beer. My opinion might change if I was in an area where it gets genuinely hot.
Soon a s I read this it reminded me of Germany. I saw a lot of people mixing beer and soda together. My mom likes Bitburger and orange soda. I still have not tried this yet. Maybe I will this weekend!
I guess we were looking for different things, because I WANTED the grapefruit to be the dominant flavor. This was meant to be a summer refresher, and the cold, grapefruity sweetness was welcome on our many 105 degree days!
