I don't think OP has checked out Grapefruit Advocate lately... to me, GF Sculpin doesn't taste artificial at all. The beer isn't sweet like the generic ones OP mentions. I think it's an amazing beer... then again I like pretty much all beers I try.

I guess it depends on whether you like grapefruit notes. I just tried the grapefruit Sculpin and I liked it much better than Sculpin, or Habanero Sculpin.

Habanero Sculpin is the best Sculpin, and anyone who says differently is all wet.

As others have mentioned the Sculpin variants are really up front with their flavors. Grapefruit=Lots of Grapefruit. Habanero=Lots of Habanero. First time I had Grapefruit and Habanero I didn't like either of them and thought the added flavor was overpowering. I prefer the original but will have the variants if I want something sweet or hot. Now I'm curious how the variants would taste if you cut them with the original.

Dated 15128 - By no means do I think it is a poor beer. I think I am used to (and was probably expecting) more subtle grapefruit flavors driven by the hop profile. I do prefer citrus forward low malt IPAs.

You're not "missing" anything. Taste is subjective and sometimes influence and hype go a long way in the craft world. I also feel the taste is artificial. It's a decent enough tasting beer, but I definitely don't love it as much as others seem to.

I don't typically buy regular Sculpin based on the price, but I keep buying the grapefruit when I stop at the store. And I like all sorts of IPAs and DIPAs. I guess I'm a sucker for a gimmick beer based on the comments here. I thought I was just drinking some that tastes good?

Funny some are mentioning the "artificial" feel of it, what I enjoyed about this beer was the natural grapefruit flavor. After having some of my wife's Schofferhofer Grapefruit and Harpoon UFO Big Squeeze I was concerned about how sweet this beer would be. However it had a nice bitterness from the added grapefruit and none of the residual sweetness the aforementioned beers have.

Once I had grapefruit Sculpin I'm sort of done buying regular, but that's just me. Don't sweat it OP, I'm sure there are some well reviewed/hyped beers I don't care for either.

Do you like notes that are grapefruit notes in your beers? Something about horses. If not then you might not enjoy this beer very much.

Is this honestly the only beer you don't "get" (i.e. a beer that is highly rated that you don't like and/or understand the appeal). Man, if I started a thread for every beer that fit in this category for me, it would be a full-time job.

The only thing that you are not getting is that, although there can be general agreement, there is still a hell of a lot of variation regarding opinion on any beer. It's part of the human condition.

    I love the Original.

    I love the Grapefruit version.

I love the Habanero version. I am a SA (Sculpin Advocate).

Drink what you enjoy, don't fret about what you don't, because there's always a "next" beverage adventure. Enjoy the journey.

I am a fan of all things Sculpin. Had the Grapefruit on tap at my local a couple of weeks back and found it to be delicious.

I am a big fan of the grapefruit, it is probably my favorite kind of fruity beer of this style, but it's a little overpriced for a six pack so now I just buy singles. I want to try mixing the grapefruit with the habanero

I'm with you on this one; regular Sculpin is fantastic, especially when I can find it fresh here up nort'. However, grapefruit Sculpin just tastes like Sculpin saturated in Fruit Loops to me. It definitely lives up to it's name with an abundance of grapefruit-esque juiciness, but it does taste a bit "fabricated," as you put it.

hah, well said. Now Im probably going to go buy some fruit loops. it's also not that nostalgic for me anymore because I can get it at the drop of a hat because I work at a liquor store that gets it in all the time.

One of if not the best BBA stouts on the market. I would pay more than they already charge without thinking. Sculpin is a mediocre IPA that is worth 8.88-9.99 and not a penny more.

I would drink a sculpin anytime, pretty much anywhere. Grapefruit is, to me, a less appealing version of the original. But stil…
