So a buddy of mine took the trip to VT and picked me up a growler of Grassroots legitimacy. The original intention was to score a growler of Edward, as I've yet to try any HF beer period, but there was a mix up. So it goes.

So now that Edward is officially my personal whalez brah, I was curious if the legitimacy would be an accurate representation of a HF pale? I've tried researching (and used the search function..sorry if I missed it) to see what the relationship between grassroots and HF but can't find anything specific.

Is it a totally different different brewery?
Is it just the moniker under which HF produces beers outside of their ancestral series?
Am I missing out on what a hill farm pale is like?
Am I over thinking this? Most definitely considering I'm sure it'll be an excellent beer.

    Thanks!

    never had it, but

    "Notes/Commercial Description:
India Pale Ale brewed with 2-row malted barley, oats, and citrusy hops from the Pacific Northwest. Dry hopped copiously with Simcoe. Its sessionable drinkability belies its true IPA nature."

= recipe for amazing hill farmstead beer.

    Think I have this right...

Shaun Hill started Grassroots Brewing with Ryan Witter-Merrithew when he was still in Denmark to do collaborations, then Ryan continued to brew under it in some capacity when Shaun came home and started Hill Farmstead. At some point Ryan then became head brewer at Siren, and I believe Shaun took back the label.

It's hard to find a method to the madness to which beers go under the Grassroots label, but definitely all collaborations, as well as a few beers that someone else had a hand in the recipe (Convivial Suarez). There's a few I can't find an explanation for why they are Grassroots beers (Song of Spring?), but maybe because those are one-offs?

As for Legitimacy, it's not the best IPA he's made, but it would be the best IPA or just beer for that matter from 90% of the breweries out there.

    To confuse matters further:

Not all collaboration go under GR, for example Peleg was brewed with Rune and Per Olaf from Bryggeriet Djævlebryg and Anders Kissmeyer.

Some GR stuff is also brewed at both Hill Farmstead and another brewery, like Artic Saison & Wheat is the New Hops.

Got Legitimacy Friday at 12 and was gone by 7. It's legit. On par with other HF's IPA. Agree with Auror that it may not be his best, but it ain't far off. Enjoy!!

If you look at the bottle it will tell you which brewery produced the beer. Like Arctic soiree was produced in Alaska, and brother Soinge in VT. I also think its safe to say all beer for growlers is produced in VT

Wow, ok...Grassroots does get a bit complicated. Thanks for the info!

I'm so pumped. Thanks! My one bud told me between this, sip of sunshine, and an unexpected can of second fiddle, legitimacy was his favorite beer of the trip.

yeah, "not shaun hill's best IPA" isn't saying much. at this point, i've had enough world class pale ales from HF to talk about, like, the 10th best one as "really really good".

Bottom line: Keep trying to score that HF!! But don't sacrifice your chances at getting something else just for the HF.

    very true.

Very true. Luckily, there's a lot of beer to be had but it kinda makes me all the more motivated to haul ass up from Philly on one of those waistfield market weekends to try even more deliciousness.

I just want to ask this here instead of cluttering the bored:

Would driving up to be at hunger mountain for that friday morning delivery allow me enough time to get to HF on that same day? Keeping in mind staying in Waterbury for the taps that night and then getting in line for the Waistfield Market on Saturday? Is that possible or just madness?

Hunger Mountain sells Heady and their Lawson's bottles at 3 PM on Fridays. This past Friday, I was able to get my 3 growler fills at Hill Farmstead, then head to Hunger Mountain and wait in line for Heady/Lawson's.

The only thing I wonder, is how is that line at Hunger Mountain when it's Double Sunshine? Wonder if you'd have to get there even earlier.

I don't know if this helps, but it appears that Grassroots is a DBA filed by Shaun. The DBA looks to be wholly owned by Hill Farmstead, LLC per the VT SOS website: https://www.vtsosonline.com/online/BusinessInquire/BusinessInformation?businessID=253866

I do not know why some beers are branded as Grassroots and others as HF. Suffice it to say that any beer produced with that branding would at least come under Shaun's authority as he would appear to own both entities.

Some of my favorite HF beers are brewed under the Grassroots label - Brother Soigne, Convivial Suarez, Sankt Hans. The fact that sometimes people undervalue Grassroots vs. Hill Farmstead makes it easier to snag Grassroots stuff. Back during the DBD release, we were able to buy multiple cases of Sankt Hans compared to limit 1 of all the HF stuff, and the Sankt has held up amazing.

Arctic Saison is brewed at Anchorage, AK I'm not sure if there was a batch brewed at HF, but the first and most recent were definitely not brewed at HF. Wheat is the new hops was also brewed in by Mikkeler in Europe in 12 oz bottles, only the 375s from this year were from HF.

i think... the old batch of saison/soiree had blue labels differing from the direct print (recent release brewed @ anchorage) the blue labels were done at HF

regarding the IPAs, edward is really good, abner and double citra are on another planet (i know they cant be compared apples to apples, but people compare ZD to heady to X/Y/Z all the time)

    Susan FTW.
Best IPA brewed by Shaun. Abner, S&S 4 & 5, Dub Citra close behind.
