All of the "Arctic" beers (Arctic Saison B1/B2 & Soiree) were brewed and bottled in Anchorage. The style of 750ml bottle used is a dead giveaway as well. Also, all the Grassroots bottles (whether brewed in VT or elsewhere) say right on them where they were brewed/bottled.

Legitimacy is the only Grassroots beer I've had, but it's absolutely on par with the HF stable. As others have said, it's not their very best -my favorite's actually Susan- but it's still amazing.

Legitimacy is no worse or better than other HF pale/ipa/dipa beers, beyond subjectivity. I had it last night thanks to homie @MooltiPass and found it to be in league with the best I have had from HF- SS 4, 5, and 6, Abner, Double Citra, Double Galaxy (decent apples to oranges, I know). I don't think I liked it better than any of those titans, but I still preferred it to much of their pale offerings such as Amarillo Single Hop, Harlan, Excursions 1, What is Enlightenment etc.

I'm sure there are plenty that disagree, but I like Legitimacy better than Edward and find it personally more distinct when compared to others in it's same style.

it's funny how subjective these things are. i agree with you on amarillo single hop and harlan, but i'd put what is enlightenment above all the ones in your positive list except the doubles.

Yeah, it's pretty wild how much taste can differ. Me, I'm actually not much of an Edward guy, I'll take me a ZD, FPPA or [good batch] PSue over it. That said, many swoon over it and I have friends who's opinions I respect and value who say it is their favorite brew overall.

Coincidentally, I have two buddies who both say that What is Enlightenment is near the bottom of the HF totum pole based on their preference, as was the opinion of my girlfriend when we drank it. I thought it quite tasty! Nonetheless, I prefer others because my preference is more for the crisp dryness of SS4, SS6 and Double Galaxy than the balance of Edward or What is Enlightenment. It's amazing to say so many home runs come from the same shop.

Can't compare Edward to FPPA or ZD, those are actually IPAs (mid 6% abvs). For the style, it's about as perfect as you can get.

Think this is a pretty natural human "more" bias. You can balance an IPA, so why bother drinking a well-balanced Pale that has less of everything? I don't see this as a "wrong" attitude, either. Flavor is king! Can see the effect here: http://beergraphs.com/bg/133-some-like-it-hot-how-abv-influences-ratings/

yes, well it's complicated. grassroots wants more from the relationship but HF wants to date other ppl. HF had to get a penicillin shot because grassroots was partying one night and things got crazy and brought it back home to HF. so there's all that drama too. right now they're taking a break and will play it by ear.

My dream is that Shaun will decide that the reputation of Grassroots is divorced enough from the "drink-it-like-fresh-milk" HF IPAs that Legitimacy could see cans. Will never, ever happen, though!

As everyone else on this thread has said: The brewer puts as much effort into the VT-brewed Grassroots lineup as any of the HF beers. Legitimacy is world class and certainly on a par with Edward or any of the other ancestral regulars.

Grassroots is the label Shaun uses when he brews in collaboration with another brewer. Pretty straightforward IMO.

Elab1, Elab2, Daybreak, Le Sarrasin, Nor, Peleg were all brewed in collab with someone but not on the Grassroots label

Figured I should report back: crushed that 64oz Legitimacy on Friday with the aid of my big bro and old man. I feel silly for ever questioning the quality of Grassroots brewing (in comparison to traditional HF beers). Such a soft, juicy , full flavored IPA.

It was such a hit with my brother he's putting in for vacation days to go on Beercation with me in September.

Once again, thanks for all the input!
