Was going through my beer closet looking for something to drink and ran across a blackout stout with an enjoy by date of 8/02/10, would that make the beers bottling date about 2 years old or does anyone know how old this beer is?

Similarly I have some 2011 bottles that say enjoy by May this year. I thought all imperial stouts can last a few years?

Checking great lakes website I see that this beer is only available Nov-Jan so I'm guessing bottle date is around 11/2009?

I believe Blackout has a shelf-life of 6 months, although you can of course age it longer. Blackout used to be released in the Feb-April, and they just recently changed it to Nov-Jan. So I'm assuming the bottle was bottled in February 2010.

GL Blackout Stout is upwards of 9%abv. It should keep fine. That brewery puts ``best by'' dates on all of their beers. On a similar note, if you look at every 4- or 6-pack container Founders makes, they always say ``keep refrigerated'', even on KBS and Imperial Stout (and we all know that's not really necessary).

So I tried it and having had this beer at different stages I'd have to say 1 yr old>2 years old>fresh, now I just have to get my hands on some Ba Blackout.

A year is about the most I'd put on one of those - but at two years, I doubt it would be bad. Just not as enjoyable as its younger brothers.

the nov-jan bottling is new. previously it was released in the springtime but they changed it for the last release. the 2010 bottle OP has is likely from sometime earlier in the year.
