CLEVELAND, Mar. 22, 2017—Just in time for summer, Great Lakes® Brewing Company (GLBC) beer is prepped to go where it’s never gone before—into cans.

Beginning in May 2017, year-round Turntable Pils and seasonal Lightkeeper Blonde Ale will be available in 12 oz. can 12-Packs. Former pub exclusive Rally Drum Red Ale will be available in 16 oz. can 12-Packs. Turntable Pils 16 oz. can 12-Packs will follow in Aug. 2017.

For 28 years the independent family-owned Great Lakes Brewing Company has offered a diverse portfolio of award-winning year-round and seasonal brews in bottle and draft. GLBC is excited to introduce a new package their customers and partners have asked for, featuring three brands and styles that perfectly fit can-friendly venues and activities.

In order to craft high quality and consistent canned beer while considering longer-term expansion opportunities, GLBC established an interim partnership with Harpoon Brewery. Great Lakes and Harpoon will be working closely together to produce and package three canned brands at Harpoon’s facility in Boston.

Bill Boor, CEO at Great Lakes comments, “Getting Great Lakes’ beer into cans so it can be enjoyed in places and situations where bottles are not viable has been our intention for some time. We have great respect for the Harpoon organization and feel our values, culture, and commitment to great beer fit very well together. So the opportunity to work in partnership with them is the right initial step in our can strategy. We’re very excited about what this means for our products and customers and we’re excited to be working with Harpoon to make this happen.”

Mark Hunger, Great Lakes Brewmaster adds, “What’s most important to me is making sure the quality and taste of any beer we put our name on is what our customers expect. We are very confident in Harpoon’s process and quality standards and I’m looking forward to working closely with them, especially with these three excellent beers.”

Each package features artwork by award-winning illustrator Darren Booth and represents celebrated stories and figures from the Great Lakes region. GLBC’s canned brews will be available everywhere GLBC beer is sold beginning in May 2017.

Like the announcement that they're going to start canning some of their beers, but disappointed that they will only be sold as 12 packs. Seems odd to not sell 4 or 6 packs (especially for the 16 oz cans).

Recently tried the Turntable Pils and really liked it. Also like the idea of a 12 pack of 16oz cans

Why do bottles need to be cool again?

The only thing right now bottles offer is the opportunity to buy distributed beers only sold in weird size formats that aren't 12 or 16 ounces.

I wonder if there will be a noticeable difference between Harpoon-brewed Great Lakes and Great Lakes-brewed Great Lakes

These 3 would make a nice variety pack for the summer.

    Thanks for your post!

I read the OP too quickly and I missed the paragraph of:

"In order to craft high quality and consistent canned beer while considering longer-term expansion opportunities, GLBC established an interim partnership with Harpoon Brewery. Great Lakes and Harpoon will be working closely together to produce and package three canned brands at Harpoon’s facility in Boston."

Larry (@LeRose), what do you think about this?

    Cheers!

Wow...I did not know Harpoon had any capacity to spare based on some interactions a year or so back. I haven't talked any "shop" with them in a while... They do, however, have a truly beautiful canning operation in Boston. Harpoon, I believe, has done some juggling between Boston and Vermont so maybe they have freed up some space? They are certainly capable of brewing great beer at either location.

maybe in about 30 years they will be a must have, hipster, retro craze.
I still prefer them, This sets me up to be the cool old guy circa 2047 who "always drank bottles"!

I do not intend for this to be a comment about a bottle 'trend' but in two posts I recently made in New Beer Sunday threads the beers were in stubby type bottles: one was a BIG stubby and the other was a 12 ounce stubby.

    Cheers!

Since GLBC is local for me, this is welcome news, but I question also why just 12 pks of these cans? I would love to buy a 4 pk of Dort 16 oz pounder cans, as well as Turntable Pils, and Burning River Pale ale.....why not put out a summer Gose in cans GLBC??

For the love of God, in this overcrowded market of old beer, do we really need different 12 packs of the same beer in two different can sizes? They already produce a 12 pack of bottles too. Fewer choices leads to better turnover. I rather have fresher beer than a choice between a bottle, 12oz can or 16oz can.
