Great North Aleworks looks promising

Great North Aleworks is more than promising, it's a shining beacon of hope with a kick ass ipa! The owners Rob and Lisa are very cool and pasionate about what they're doing. I suggest you head on over to Manchester and check them out!

 

Rob is great. He gave us a tour and ended up talking brewing and how he got where he is with us for over an hour after they closed. One of the best experiences I've had at a brewery and as you mentioned, a consistently drinkable, local ipa option!

 

Do these distribute to the seacoast?

I'm from NH and think the IPA is a tasty local option at a low price. The Robust Vanilla Porter, however, was one of my least favorite beers that I've tried from the past year. I haven't had the chance to try anything else from them yet.

 

I went this past weekend. I enjoyed my time with the North's. Nice people, good beer. I agree they're off to a promising start.

My criticism is the same criticism I have with Newburyport, though.

They have three beers that'll be their flagship lineup and that's great. Perfect em. I love that idea. However, besides the Rauchbier, which I was super impressed by, it's hard to justify purchasing a six of the others. Not because they're bad, but because there are better options: (1) there are better readily IPA's. As someone who doesn't buy that style often, I'd opt for a different one when I do -- Otter Creek, Jacks Abby (IPL's, I get it), Night Shift; (2) the Robust Porter, for which I was really stoked is kind of a mess right now. Doesn't mean they won't get it, but a little strong on the vanilla (a flavor I really like).

Again, same as NBPT. Good people, but there are better pales, ipa's, and whites (I mean, c'mon, Allagash is the standard and it's everywhere). I will drink them occasionally at most.

TL;DR: better options for each style available. Good people, though. Hope they continue to do well.

 

Are cans available for purchase from the tasting room? Average price of a six pack?

 

Newburyport Plum Island is the same price as Allagash but you get a 6-pack instead of a 4-pack. I find them highly similar beers as well. $0.15/oz vs. $0.22/oz.

This is the argument in favor of Great North as well. You can find their IPA for sub-$10 (maybe sub $9 at the really cheap places) a 6-pack, which is pretty insane in this rising price market.

 

Agreed. Though if the comparison to Route 101 is accurate, then we have a beer at that price for a six and beating it easily as a 12 pack. Regardless, I'm all for more beer with value pricing.

 

Cans are available at the tasting room along with growlers and merchandise. They run about $10 per 6er.

 

I rescind my previous evaluation. I had the IPA tonight alongside an excellent beef burrito and it was outstanding.

 

Heading to Grantham, NH this weekend and was just wondering if there was anything interesting along 93. Good timing on resurrecting the thread. Looking forward to checking them out!

ETA: that's seems like a crazy large distribution footprint for a place that just opened. Anyone know the story on how they came out of the gate so fast?

 

It seems big but I don't think the actual mileage is huge. Ask them though, they're very willing to discuss things over a pint. Except their IPA recipe. Believe me, I asked! Hope you enjoy

 

Seems just like they were smart, did their homework, and were capitalized enough. They got their distributor behind them as well.

Off 93, the Derry/Londonderry area has 4 breweries and a meadery that you can hit on a Saturday. From the Barrel, Kelsen, 603, and Rockingham (plus Moonlight Meadery).

 

You might try the Flying Goose Brew Pub in New London usually 12 or so beers all made on site and some really good ones. They did a BBA stout in the fall that was really good.
