    Today's Friday update (4/24/20)

    3 Notion Fridays

    Happy Friday, everyone!
After a little break we are back with great new beers and some exciting updates.
Here are your 3 Notions for this week...

    Releases

    This Past Week
    Afterglow
A West Coast style IPA brewed with a rotating cast of hops, this version of Afterglow is special for 2 reasons: 1) it’s brewed with Mosaic so it’s kinda like Juice Jr’s West Coast cousin, and 2) this batch of cans got a makeover with some super rad special edition artwork by @timberps. Proceeds from the sale of these cans will be donated to COVID19 relief efforts at OHSU and our surrounding community of PPE front line workers. We are so incredibly thankful for all the people that put their lives on the line daily to make all of us safer and we look forward to being together on the other side of this and raising a glass to you!
    $18/4pack (7% abv, single batch)

    Fruit Monster PMG
PMG, yeah you know me. Fruit Monster PMG is the latest in our series of tart ales with rotating fruits and milk sugar, this time brewed with peach, mango, and guava. Drink up before the Fruit Monster grabs it all!
    $20/4pack (6% abv, double batch)

    Pineapple Pillows
Pillows made of pineapple probably wouldn’t be very cuddly but they sound delicious! Pineapple Pillows is one of our newest fruited NE IPAs. We added lush pineapple during every part of the brewing process and then dry hopped with loads of Motueka and Sabro for a soft yet assertive hop flavor.
$20/4 pack (7.5% abv, double batch)

    Lemon Glow Up
Lemon Glow Up is a small batch double IPA brewed @greatnotionalberta with Lemon Up Girl Scout cookies, gooey marshmallows, Meyer lemon, and fragrant vanilla, all rounded out with a touch of milk sugar. A zesty confection in a can!
$20/4pack (8% abv, super limited quantities)

We also have cans of our two pilsners, Laid-Off Logger and Scribble (drinks more like a hazy IPA than a pils), both $15/4pack, as well as Sorcerer's Apprentice bottles. ($15)

    Great Notion App

In our last newsletter, we hinted that our new Great Notion app was on its way, and we are pleased to announce that it will hopefully be rolling out this upcoming week. Our newsletter subscribers will get an advance preview of the app and its features, so keep an eye on your inbox in the coming days. The first version will be focused on introducing everyone to the wonderful virtual world of Great Notion. It will include an introduction to the Timber crew, our virtual can archive, background stories on all the characters, and more. You will also be able to order on the app for beer delivery locally in Portland and for pick-up. Later versions in the coming weeks will add merchandise, can check-ins, shipping and rad games. We are working on getting some new tanks fully installed and up and running in May before we roll out shipping (starting with Oregon shipping only). Stay tuned for more details here, on our Instagram, and on Facebook.

    Updated Hours

Packaged to-go beer is still available for pick-up at our 2444 NW 28th Ave location with safe social distancing practices in place. We are now open everyday, Mon-Sun, from 12-7pm.

Please check our Instagram stories to see what's available before heading out!

And as always, stay safe, drink beer. Cheers, folks!

    Great Notion App

    Android Users Rejoice
The GNB app for Android drops TODAY in the PlayStore. We are so stoked to see what y'all think, so get that download queued up, try it out, and let us know how much you love it. Check out our FAQ here.

    iOS v2
We have also updated the iOS app to fix a couple of bugs, so if you haven't already, make sure you update or reinstall your app before placing your next order.

    Feedback
Keep it coming! We really appreciate your messages and emails giving us a heads-up about any problems in the app while we work out the bugs in beta. Your input goes a long way toward helping us make this the best app ever, so thank you! Feel free to drop us a line with any questions or concerns in the app, via email at [email protected], or on social. We'll also have another update in the next few weeks to intro some super fun games and merch.

    Shipping
The number one question we're getting these days is when we will finally roll out shipping, and we are excited to let you know that it's coming. We hope to start sending out beer in June. Oregon will be the first state for a few weeks while we nail down the processes, and we will announce more details down the line, including which other states are eligible and when. Stay tuned for more details here in the newsletter, on our Instagram, and on Facebook.

    Releases

    This Past Week
    Double Stack
You know it, you love it, and DROPPING ONLY ON THE APP TOMORROW 5/9 (don’t rush to pickup right away, you have all day Sat and Sunday to pickup)!!! Double Stack is our Imperial Breakfast Stout fermented with an irresponsible amount of maple syrup & aged on whole bean coffee from local Oregon roasters. $22/4pack (11% abv)

    Cosmic Duality
This is our contribution to a two-part collab with our friends at Bottle Logic. Cosmic Duality is a tart ale loaded with marionberry for a little PNW flair, as well as blueberry, coconut, and vanilla. The SoCal version will deliver a punch of mango, peach, coconut, vanilla, and lactose when it drops at Bottle Logic in a couple of weeks. Both brews are so good they’ll have you seeing double. $22/4pack (7.5% abv

    Juice Invader
Juice Invader is a single-hop hazy IPA brewed with a massive amount of Galaxy hops from Australia. Beware of out-of-this-world citrus and passionfruit notes – hops are attacking! $18/4pack (7.2% abv, single batch)

    Collaborations

We may not be doing any events while we all stay home and stay safe, but we have been working on a ton of sick collabos with our friends around the country. These beers will be coming your way over the next few weeks, including all these killers:

    1. We brewed with @wayfinderbeer a couple of days ago (6 feet apart with PPE, of course), so check them out for more info soon.
    2. With @fremontbrewing, a double IPA follow-up to Mr. Sun, this time Mr. Rain
    3. With Chuck's Hop Shop, we're dropping See the Light next week @greatnotionnw and at Chuck's for Seattle Beer Week.
    4. Cosmic Duality with @bottlelogicbrewing released yesterday, with their version coming soon.
    5. Juice ², a triple IPA, will be dropping both at GNB and Equilibrium (@eqbrewery) in NY in the same week
    6. Keep an eye out for more news on a top secret project with @otherhalfnyc!
    7. Also coming back next week, Blueberry Cobbler Muffin with @southerngristbrewing
    8. A rad DIPA with @vitaminseabrewing
    9. A secret @bottlecraft anniversary beer
    10. Pina Koleidascope, an IPA with pineapple and coconut with @courtyardbrew in NOLA
    11. Another secret brew, this time with @fortgeorgebeer

    ...And even more to come!

Have some socially distant fun this weekend, test out the app, and we'll see you next Friday!

I know I've said this before, but, damn, even their press releases give me a headache. Do they actually talk like that in person?

They actually don't, which is why I find their email posts somewhat annoying (on occasion) as well. I think the author is just trying to be lighthearted and funny, but sometimes it seems as if he gets a bit carried away.

How does anyone actually drink a double stack? It’s kinda disgusting. I like GN plenty, been to the taproom in pdx, and have had some delicious beers from them. A kind friend just dropped off 3 GN cans for me, one was double stack. I feel like this was made for buddy the elf.

If you don't mind me asking, what have you had from GN that you did like? Especially as pastry stouts go, the DS is the least objectionable beer that they make. At least that's been my experience.

I’ve had several of their hazy IPAs, mostly at their PDX taproom, and a few cans, that I enjoyed. But I thought double stack was one of their trademark brews, and man that was a rough one to drink, for my palate. WAY too sweet.

There does seem to be some batch variation, and I would agree that some have been overly sweet (at least for my palate). That being said, you might want to give their stouts a pass. Pretty much every one I've tried has been as sweet or sweeter than DS; a couple were so sweet they nearly set off my gag reflex.

People drink beers I can't stand every single day. And eat foods I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot fork. And listen to music that sounds like crap to me. And perform activities which strike me as an utter waste of time.

People like different things. Nothing wrong with that.

As for Double Stack, they can have it. I'm not a fan.

    Freaky Friday!

We teamed up with Other Half Brewing to swap recipes and brew one of their classics at Great Notion. Double dry-hopped Citra Daydream is an Oat Cream IPA packed with Citra hops, Citra Lupulin powder, oats, and a hint of lactose sugar. It’s always fun to team up with Other Half and this one is a dream! (6% abv) $18/4pack

For those of you in NYC, we hope you got your hands on their version of Super Ripe a couple of weeks ago! We heard it was just as dope the the OG.

    Next Week

Double Blueberry Shake and a big batch of Ripe will be dropping on the app

Serious? Is that in writing anywhere?

I enjoy most of their beer (outside of the pastry bombs), but I’m actually a little worried that they’re (over-)expanding too fast.

Gotta keep that Lotion rare.

    New Beers

    Samson’s Tropical Vacation
    (7.5 abv) $22/4pack
Summer vacations may be cancelled but we’re still bringing the heat with this dope collaboration with Bottlecraft in San Diego. Samson’s Vacation, is a totally tubular tart ale with pineapple, lime, coconut, and vanilla.

    Afterglow
    (7% abv) $18/4pack
We're not sure if it's the rotating selection of bright hops or the crisp California Ale yeast, but this spin on a West Coast-style IPA keeps us feeling really good after each experience. This batch was brewed with a beautiful balance of Centennial, Cascade, Simcoe, and Columbus hops.

    Seattle News

For our friends in Seattle who have been waiting patiently for more news on our newest location – never fear, @greatnotionballard is still in the works, and even better, we are doubling the haze with ANOTHER Seattle taproom. Great Notion Georgetown will be located at 6235 Airport Way S, Seattle, WA 9810, and you can give us a follow @greatnotiongeorgetown for updates as we get closer to our grand opening. The goal is to have Georgetown up and running this summer, and Ballard will follow in the fall.

We know all of you in PDX are also itching to get out and visit your favorite bars and restaurants, including our three Portland taprooms. Our first priority is the health and safety of our guests and our coworkers, so we will not be opening for dine-in service until we are confident that we have effective procedures in place to protect everyone. At the moment our plan is to open our taprooms in stages sometime in July starting with the Beaverton pub, but this is subject to change as new information becomes available. You can also expect some major changes in service during the first stage of reopening; most significantly, dining room seating will be reservation-only. You can keep an eye on our pub Instagram pages for more updates later in the month: @greatnotionnw, @greatnotionalberta, and @greatnotionbeaverton.

    Black is Beautiful

As you might have seen on our social media channels, we are busy brewing Black is Beautiful this week. This open-source collaboration is a strong stout with a strong message dreamed up by Weathered Souls Brewing Co., a black-owned brewery down in San Antonio, TX. 100% of proceeds from the sale of Black is Beautiful will go to Black Resilience Fund, an emergency fund dedicated to healing and resilience by providing immediate resources to Black Portlanders.

We will continue our efforts to support our community and the causes that are important to us. We will not simply post apathetically on social media, but instead put our money where our mouths are. We've donated thousands of dollars already this month to Color Of Change and National Bail Out. As a company and as individuals, we are taking other actions as well, like dropping beers off at Kee's #Loaded Kitchen for the great work they are doing for our community, protesting with our kids outside, having tough conversations with friends and family and more. We want to do better, be better, and stand up for Black Lives.

Keep fighting the good fight, and we'll see you next week.
