If you look at BbyDigital's avatar, you'll see that it's a pic of Bernie Sanders...holding a can of Heady.

The dude obviously controls the trade of Heady into Oregon, and he's afraid that all the De Garde traders won't need Heady anymore, now that Great Notion is on the scene. He's protecting his turf.

On the premise that they were standard 1/2bbl kegs, there were 1984oz available. Dudes are coming in and grabbing 640+ oz at a time? I know that GG exists to sell beer, but maybe there's a point where they say "whoa there cowboy, settle down"? How many of their regular, loyal customers missed out because of this?

I actually felt the same way and was hoping they'd set limits since my parents were going to be in Portland the next day and I wanted a crowler....

Well, it does raise the question if it's even a bottle shops place to set limits. They do it all the time for limited release bottles, why not limits on draft-to-go? Or is it a thing where they follow the breweries wishes? Growler Guys gets tons of love in this forum, is this regular policy for them "Yeah sure, we'll empty this keg into cans for ya!"?

Probably quite a few, but they're going to make more, no? Also, isn't it generally available over at the brewpub if you want a crowler fill? If this was a one time opportunity, then I would whole heartedly agree with this thinking, but... this stuff isn't really all that scarce, is it?

It depends on the beer. There are plenty of beers that they only sell by the glass, but usually only if it's something unusually rare and/or limited (BCBS, Vietnamese Speedway, Maui imperial coconut stout, etc.). I assume they figured that Juice Box didn't qualify as something rare or limited.

Well, if folks are buying 20+ containers at a time, it would seem to indicate that at least some people consider it rare enough that they have to grab as much as they can when they see it.

Good point. Live and learn maybe? My guess is that this likely caught them by surprise (for the life of me, I can't begin to imagine why someone would do this sort of thing), and perhaps next time (if there is a next time) they'll impose some purchasing limits. The guys over at PDX GG are pretty smart and adaptable. If this kind of raid on GN stuff happens regularly, then it wouldn't surprise me at all if they limit crowler purchases.

Definitely not plentiful. The first two times I went there they only had one IPA on. Sold Out across the others. I actually went to GG during this time because Juice Jr. was gone at the brewery.

It's definitely a balancing act. On the one hand, we're in the business of selling beer, not storing it, so we want it out the door in a timely manner. On the other hand, we (and most bottle shops) want to spread the love and try to give more people a shot at bottles rather than letting one truck chaser come in and buy our entire allotment of something.

The same thing applies to draft. If it's exceedingly rare (especially in a 1/6bbl) we'll often go "glass only" for the first couple days, and then open it up to pint sales a few days later, but growlers are typically out of the question. Then there's some beers that appear regularly enough that we could do growlers, but the brewery doesn't want the beer in growlers so we respect their wishes.

I'm inclined to give GG a pass on this one, simply because Great Notion blew up faster than any of us anticipated. Hell, given that they were more than willing to even sell kegs to other bars is proof that even they were caught off guard.

Let's not let facts or reality get in the way of internet forum chatter.

No one purchased 20+ crowlers of Juice Jr while we had in on-tap. I believe 1 or 2 guys purchased 12 crowlers during the span of over 5+ hours on a Saturday...as in, bought 3 crowlers...decided to come back later and buy 3 more, etc. I know it's double digits but 12 is a far far cry from 20.

Regardless, do you know how long Juice Jr was on-tap before those 1 or 2 guys purchased ~12 crowlers? A full six days. And looking at the reports from the day after those 12 crowlers were purchased we still had enough beer to fill four 64oz growlers, three crowlers and multiple pints. Cry me a river that we 'allowed' 1 or 2 customers to 'drain' the keg when we had it available for an entire week.

I think anyone who is a regular customer of ours knows we either don't do fills of certain specialty type beers that only come in 1/6bbl's for the very reason that we want as many people as possible to have a chance to try 'X' beer. But people are going to criticize or get into FOMO mode that we 'allowed' a couple customers to 'drain' a keg of a brand new breweries beer that up until 6 days from the day we tapped it was moving at a slower pace than every other IPA we had on the board? Sorry, just doesn't compute for me. Bitch about something else.

I apologize for the Internet hyperbole. 20 each is not 12.

I didn't mean to misrepresent your impressions. You called one beer watery, lacking depth and at the same time tasty. And another you described as basic, not complex and not something you'd seek out again. Sounded like you didn't really care for those beers. As @John_M would say "shrug", I guess what really matters is what you meant to convey, not my interpretation.

I actually think beer pricing really matters and is worth talking about.
