I don't know about that. Some will react in that manner, but others will hold the beer to an unrealistic standard of quality given the high price.

Just speaking for myself, I know I'm much more forgiving of a stout or IPA if I didn't pay a lot of money for. However, if the same beer costs what I feel is double or triple the norm for the style, I know I can be pretty scathing in my review of the beer. I feel as if the brewery is trying to pull a fast one, and it tends to piss me off.

I'm hoping to try the beer on draft, and it really better be pretty damn good at this point. Given the aggressive pricing and "bonus schwag" nonsense, this absolutely better be one of the better BA impy stouts I've ever tasted.

Nah, those people aren't standing in line for hours in the rain to buy a beer they've never tried. Your personal stance on this makes sense, but like I said, you're not waiting in line for this one or dropping upwards of $600 for it.

I'll agree that taproom tastings may be rated lower, but not by much. And if bottle reviews are higher? That just further justifies whatever amount of time or money it took to acquire one.

Jesus, that is insane. This strategy all but guarantees most will be sent out of state. Hopefully they'll have sufficient draft for locals.

I mean selfishly I wish the price point was a bit lower but

    No online sale/proxies
Single bottle sales at a later time at the taproom
    Draft at the taproom

They did right by the locals.

So are clamguns still the preferred personal defense mechanism of choice to head off the hoards of handtrucks, or that far up river are you expected to have held on to your paddle for the battle in the puddle for the bottle?

I have to run by the office for a few hours on Saturday, and I'm going to try to swing by the brewery. That should be around 10:00 or so.

In a train wreck kind of way, I just have to see how awful the shit storm is on Saturday.

I'll be there. Will probably have around a dozen or so friends in line hanging out, will likely know some people who bring grills and cook food, etc.

Need to head to Modern Times for a pickup anyways, so might as well wait *redacted* hours in the rain first, right?

But I've literally made good friends with people in beer lines, even specifically Great Notion lines. People whose houses I've stayed at, people I've gone camping with, people whose weddings I'm invited to, etc. It's not all shitlords, some people just enjoy the shitshow.

I have no interest in the beer, but I'm curious how the line shenanigans are gonna go down.

i appreciate the positive outlook. i just cant do it.

hopefully its a great beer. I have to assume with this kind of pricing that they have tasted it and feel confident in its quality

I would go along with that reasoning a lot more readily had I not had the dubious pleasure of sampling chocolate covered strawberries, blueberry pancakes and the double chocolate coconut brownie stout. I thought all three of those beers were pretty disappointing and was a bit surprised GN was so high on them. So I'm going to reserve judgment on the BA DS until I actually get to sample it (IF I get to sample it).

As for the comment by @ChugChugPass, I feel the same way. I think it's great that he gets so much enjoyment out of standing for hours in a beer line, but I just can't do it either. Frankly, I just don't have that kind of free time that I can spend a sizeable chunk of it standing in line.

This is exactly how you go about moving up to the top of my "People I Will Buy A Beer" list.

Sure, John was already on the list, and comfortably in the top quarter. But wit, insight, truth, and a sharp take will always put you on the fast track.

(Side note: It's a long list, and most of the folks who frequent the NW forum are already on it.)

No clue; gonna pay attention Friday night I guess to see if there ACTUALLY are campers and how many then decide just how early we have to leave.

We'll be coming from Seattle so it's an extra shitshow for us w/ the 3 hour drive. Might be leaving in the middle of the night.

I'm living on Houston time right now for work so it's actually not that bad lol.. MIght end up leaving at like 3am.

Our friends group will probably be right up front, if we don't show up early enough we'll set our chairs up wherever in line we end up and then hang out up front. But due to the level of shit lording expected I'll probably have to keep checking on our chairs. It's not really "phantom chairing" if you are sitll hanging out in line but people sometimes assume or try to get away with moving your chairs either way.

At GN now and FYI they still have 4 pks of Double Stack available from this past Saturday (along with a few other IPAs). I love that none of thier releases are selling out on release day (even DS which seems to be a favorite of traders) and are therefore available at the brewery the following week.

As always the food, beer, and staff are top notch.

Agreed. The only thing that annoyed me was the one 4 pack purchase limit they imposed for the DS. It was my understanding that they made a particularly large batch, with plenty left over from the Saturday release. So the purchase restriction was a surprise (my understanding is that there was no purchase limit on Saturday).

I think they've had 4 packs of DS available for purchase for well over a week now.

Yeah DS was 2 Saturday's ago not this past Saturday.

There are 2 reasons for limits: making sure more people get your beer and to avoid shitlording and forcing as many people as possible to come to your business and hopefully spend more money.. considering the DS release was no limits and they sell stacks of cases to shitlords I'm guessing the latter lol

I'm sure you're right and of course they can do whatever they want, but it's annoying and not very "user friendly." I needed to get 2 fours packs, which forced me to stop by two days in succession. I like visiting the GN pub, and if there was any way I could have squeezed in some time to hang out with a beer or three, I would have done it. "Punishing" me for not sticking around to spend more money isn't a very smart business move IMHO, and it was another occasion where I left GN with a bad taste in my mouth.

Just my two cents of course, but there are a lot great places to drink beer in PDX, so this kind of behavior really isn't doing much to help their bottom line (again, IMHO).
