What are the thoughts on these guys? Looks like good stuff, but haven't really heard much about them. I'm in some of the various brewery trade groups on FB and these guys never pop up as FT or ISO. Anyone have any info on their beers? Looking into a trip from CT and wanted to know if it's worth it. Thanks!
Whether they are 'worth it' or not is a qualitative assessment you'll make based on your own experience right? If you mean are they 'worth it' for trade value the answer is no. If you're looking to make a day-trip to a nice area on the seacoast and are looking to have a good time then the answer is yes. You can do an easy brewery crawl by hitting Stoneface first, then heading into Portsmouth starting at Great Rhythm, then Liars Bench, then downtown Portsmouth.
Thanks, appreciate the info. I don't care about trade value, was just pointing out they are never mentioned and that's one of the ways I hear about breweries (aslin, monkish, etc). Just Was curious if it's good beer or not.
I visited Great Rhythm in late winter and would definitely return. His beers are good, but at the time I was there he only offered IPAs and one red ale. I'd like to see a little more variety.
Its a really nice taproom in a decent spot a little bit out of downtown. I would agree with the post above, its usually IPA only as other than the amplified amber the only non-pale/ipa they have released I can remember was Dolce, an imperial stout, which I liked. I don't think its a "make a drive to Portsmouth for the sole purpose of visiting Great Rhythm" type of place, but it is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. Their beer is a bit under the radar since they don't distribute widely.
I generally like their stuff, but even as a hophead, I'll readily admit that walking into a taproom and having my only options be a pale ale, a session IPA, and 3 IPAs (that were nearly identical in appearance) is frustrating. I get it, it's what sells, but it doesn't make me want to revisit regularly.
Agreed, and even if I don't mind constantly going back for hops my biggest beer traveling partners (wife and brother-in-law) are both malt fans. That's why they tag along with me to a relative hop factory like Trillium whenever, lately there is always Dusk Trill Dawn, Outside the Lines, Pot & Kettle, Night & Day etc on the draft list.
They are ok beers. Nothing to go nuts over. I live here in town and am quite close. But if I'm going to allocate money to beer I tend to head into Maine or maybe Stoneface. I can get much more variety at P-brewery then Great Rhythm. Check em out, but don't think there is any trade value, whatever that means anyways. I hate to say it but the bordering states all do beer better then NH. Which is why I love living close to the borders.
I really loved their pale ale. It was pretty much what I think a classic American pale ale should be. I shared one with a brewer friend and he felt the same way. At $9 a six pack, it was also pretty reasonably priced for the quality. The brewery itself is a really lovely spot. It's gorgeous modern industrial style, overlooking the water. It adds a lot to the experience of drinking their very tasty beer. Is it Trillium level? No, but Althea is a great NEIPA anyway. It's definitely worth a stop in my opinion.
made a quick visit in early Feb. great looking brewery in a growing part of Portsmouth. only samples on site at this point. had Hi-Fi, Sticky, and squeeze. sticky was a litte all over the place but hi fi was a good juice fix. Haven't been back. If you're headed to Portsmouth, and want a place with a bunch of Hoppy varieties, stoneface is great. If you're in CT and want the same, relic makes better IPA's.
Actually, it's Althea, Hi Fi, then a tie for either Sticky or Squeeze. Any of their cans that make it into distro can be safely ignored. It's a really nice tap room to stop in for a flight on a nice day when the walls are open. It's only a few minutes off 95 but not the easiest place to find.
