I've seen green wort, that looked green just from all the hops. The beer it made wasn't green but it was delicious

I was at a local brewery yesterday and they were asking if you wanted green beer when you ordered. I declined but many people in the place were drinking it up. All the barkeeps were doing was putting a few drops of food coloring into the glasses before the pour. I imagine it doesn't even change the taste? I personally don't think it looks very appealing? Was never a big fan of green kool-aid so I think I'll pass on the green beer...to each his own.

Here's my take on green beer...Packaging, bottle labeling, caps, cans, are all ON limits. Just leave the actual beer alone - OFF limits. Some of my reasoning...Downtown Chicago, when they dye the river green. It looks okay when the sun hits it from a distance, but when you get up close, it's really gross. I usually associate green with mold too. I don't need someone to put green food coloring in my beer to know it's St. Patrick's Day. Just set me up with the green straw and I'm good to go. Just kidding. Now on a side note, and somewhat related, I guess I had a green beer last week. Patty's Chile Beer at Wynkoop in Denver. Was it green in color? No, thank god. But with a name like Patty, and the fact that it was a chile beer (I see green when I think of chiles), I think this this would be a decent offering to help get your leprechaun on for St. Patty's Day. Some beers with green on the labeling...New Glarus Spotted Cow, Surly Hell, Hopslam, Hopalicious, WBC's American IPA...

DFH did a brewpub-only green Dortmunder lager called Verdi Verdi Good. Like the Freetail witbier, it used Spirulina algae for the color. It apparently didn't go over well enough to brew it again.

It's just food coloring and has no effect on the flavor. It's one day out of the year and beer is supposed to be fun.

    Go for it. Who cares.

Oh well. Some people find it fun. It's a novelty that is done once a year. No big deal. If it bothers someone that much, they don't have to drink it.

Why not???? its one fucking day. I bet it didn't taste bad. It was just green. Yikes.
1 single drop of food coloring. People color eggs for Easter. Does Egg Advocate complain ??

    Stop it.

2 years ago I was at a party and people were putting green coloring in new belgiums' ranger IPA. they had a 12 pack and, what did I bring? Alesmith numbskull barleywine. no dye for me. but to each their own. by the way I did have lots of smithwicks and guiness before opening that barleywine, so my evening did fit the irish bill.

I like it. Its simply a small fun way to help celebrate a fun holiday. If I was unknowingly served a green beer I would chuckle and enjoy the beer.

Generally, beer is dyed green to appeal to a different, likely younger crowd. Similar situation with e-cigarettes and the cherry/vanilla/cotton candy flavoring. Or spinners on cars. All functionally-useless excess to make the product stand out...
Most doggedly-traditional craft veterans will therefore be turned off by it.
My take: as long as it doesnt effect the taste in any manner whatsover, I think its fun for a day. Afterall, St Patty's Day, whether you agree with it or not, ends up being about the volume of beer not the quality of it...

You need to understand there is a crucial difference between expressing your dislike for, or even mocking a beer, and belittling those who drink it.

When it comes to beer "you are what you drink." Mocking the beer and mocking the beer drinkers are two sides of the same coin.
