If this is different than previous Silva Stouts in the past, they should have named it differently to avoid confusion.

In any case, hope to try this. The Silva Stout I tried couple years ago was solid.

If Green Flash changed their beer names every time they tweaked recipes, their lineup would always be changing.

That's a valid point, but I guess then I'm confused as to why it's considered Batch 1.

I thought Silva Stout was a bit... underwhelming when having it next to some of the bigger and bolder stouts. I am sure it is an awesome brew but I personally don't recommend drinking this side by side with other big BA stouts. It ruined my experience.

Them calling it batch 001 when they've done two other bottle releases and even had a release party for the last batch hurts my head.

    Any info on the blend?

Edit: Nevermind, saw 10 gallons per barrel of fresh beer although still doesn't say the size of the barrels but I'm assuming between 31-53 gallons which is a wide range. So basically between 67% and 81% barrel aged stout.

Depending on the size of the barrels. Some bourbon barrels are 53 gallons. The label leaves a lot to be desired about the actual amount of BA beer.

Edit for the millionth time. So after researching my initial knowledge was the bourbon barrels are 55 gallons. Seems as they are actually 53 and a barrel of beer is actually 31 gallons. So whoever has info on the actual amount of BA beer in this Silva Stout would help all BAs.

Hey folks, thanks for the interest in Silva Stout. Cellar 3 is a new packaging facility and tasting room for (primarily) barrel-aged beer in cork-finish bottles. It will be located in Poway, about 20 minutes from our main facility and it will open in the Spring. The label you see is for the first release of Cellar 3 which will be Silva Stout. All of the specific data on the bottle (dates, gallons, etc...) are merely placeholders and will be accurate on the actual bottles as they are produced.

It is impossible to know the details of each batch until they are actually produced. Chuck Silva (Brewmaster) and Pat Korn (Barrelmaster) will taste and smell every barrel and select the barrels to be used. Then they will slowly add fresh beer back until the exact desired taste is achieved.

We age the beer a very long time in the barrel, usually 18 months or more, to achieve a very distinct flavor that is intense enough to carry through the blending of fresh beer. Fresh beer is added to give the beer brightness and freshness that is lost in the barrel aging process. It takes much longer to make the beer this way, because it has to be aged much longer. We think the complexity and contrasting of the flavors is the key to Silva Stout.

Well, Mike has now answered that the specifics are yet to be determined.

To go back to my initial comment, it never occurred to me to read "barrel" as referring to the bourbon barrel. I now see the ambiguity. Either way, the minimum bba amount would be 2/3 (for beer barrel); it would be more than that if we're talking about 10 gallons fresh to 50+ gallons aged. So, if your concern is to have as much bba stout as possible in your bottle, you should be happy either way. Cheers!

Edit: Unless 2/3 sounds like too little, as you prefer unblended in the first place.

Definitely ISO. Hopefully they make a decent amount. I've had Silva Stout on my Wants list for years.

Except that a standard size barrel is 53 gallons, so at 10 gallons fresh per barrel it's less than 1/5 (20%) and over 4/5 barrel aged.... which is even better.

Edit: I probably should've read the posts after yours, but I'm impatient. Either way, more % ba is better for all of us.

Not trying to be a dick, but there is something seriously wrong with this batch of beer. I've waited years to try Silva Stout, and finally get it only to find that it is quite literally undrinkable. Straight diacetly butterscotch. It hurts even more that it's nearly $20 a bottle, for what amounted to a drain pour. I am generally a fan of your brewery and very much enjoy a lot of your offerings, but as a consumer I expect more quality control from a well respected brewery that sells a bottle of beer at that price point. Just wanted to make you aware of the problem, while simultaneously expressing my frustrations.

Based on other reviews/responses, it was not a comprehensive problem with this year's release; but it was exactly what I experienced as well. Stuff can happen, I understand, in producing a product of this kind; but still, at this price, and from a good-sized brewery which presumably has excellent quality safeguards at its disposal, it was a significant disappointment. I'd gladly accept a refund, even if I know one will never be forthcoming.

Not trying to be a dick, but you'd likely get much better response if you emailed the brewery directly about your concerns with this beer of theirs, rather that posting on BA. Just sayin.

Maybe, but I also think potential consumer's have the right to know that the $20 they are about to spend on a beer could be completely wasted. I don't think poor quality control/bad batches should be kept a secret.
