we've communicated before on different subjects, I believe, so I didn't think my choice of words would put you off. And I trust it didn't. And neither did yours.

If I remember correctly your original post expressed two points: 1) honor/respect to the store, 2) the business issue of returns. Am I correct?

Your first point, absolutely agree, is a matter of opinion. I clearly see where you're coming from. The store you patronize goes out of their way/on a limb to accommodate you. Is it honorable not to bother them with "below par product"? Certainly. Is it dishonorable to bother them? I don't think so. I'm their patron, and I deserve respect and honor just as much (if not more.) And I'm not saying one should rush back to the store and demand money on every single issue. But, as a consumer, I reserve the right to do so if I choose, according to MY circumstance. And again, I agree with what you described above, there are many routes to take before demanding your money back.

    2) Does it ruin their business? Should I worry about that? Absolutely not. And this is where, I think, your opinion is wrong . I expect them to know ALL of their product. Is it physically possible? No. And I know, I have experience working in liquor business. But I still expect them to. If they sell the product which I find below par, I expect them, as a business, to stand by it. It is irrelevant whether it's their fault. THEY sold it to me. So they're my first line of expressing grievance. But most importantly, it will not ruin their business. They can, if they choose so, fairly easily return it back to the distributor. And if that fails, if worse comes to worst, they, the business, can write this loss off, to offset their tax base. I, a consumer, cannot. I simply "lose" money. And I don't think I'm the wealthiest entity in this chain.

    Respectfully yours

Are the issues with this beer found in both batches or mostly in batch #2?

I've got a bottle of batch #1 in the cellar and am hoping for the best. Fingers crossed.

I think folks are gettin the batches confused . The 2015 release is the Cellar 3 batch 1 . It's the 3rd time overall that Silva Stout was released . I have a bottle of the new one and I hope it's good . Friends that have picked it up here are liking it though .

The one I had a couple of weeks ago was very good, was impressed but it is expensive.

I just opened up a bottle of batch #1 and it was definitely off. I was also hoping that I would be safe, but it seems like it might be more widespread.

I had previously enjoyed this beer and thought it had flavors of toffee, vanilla, caramel with a roasty stout backbone but just opened another bottle and its straight movie theater butter flavor topping for your popcorn, undrinkable! I can say there is definitely variation between bottles because it was good on draft and the other bottle I opened wasn't as good as draft but still decent. There is for sure something up with this beer, I never save receipts so im sure this is $20 down the drain.

    Yes, because I was confused!

My cellar 3, batch 1 was shitty. I messaged Green Flash on Facebook and linked them to this thread, They said "we will be looking into this for sure."

I bought 2 bottles. One was a lot of wine and butter, a drain pour. I emailed the brewery and expressed my concerns. Also included a pic of my 2 bottles in case that gave any insight. I got a response a few days later from Mike Hinkley, the founder. He said they have been receiving complaints. They have 3,000 bottles still at the brewery. They opened 50 and found no diacytal, but sent them to the lab for testing and are opening another 50 today. He said he would get back to me.
At least they are looking into this and are trying to figure out what's going on

I shared one of these with a friend recently, we poured it out. It was far too sweet for either of us. It was the latest release of the beer.

It was disappointing but drain pours happen from time to time. I didn't know that Silva Stout wasn't meant to taste like that until I read this thread though, I figured it just wasn't up my alley.

It seems a bit hard to follow since some people are saying that batch 1 is good without always specifying if they mean the original batch, or the Cellar 3 Series Batch #1. Was there a lot number somewhere on the bottles that might help us figure out which ones are more likely to be good/bad? I didn't see anything like that, but wanted to ask.

Also, for those that said it was a butter bomb, have you had Clown Shoes Crasher in the Rye, and did you think it was a butter bomb as well? I'm just trying to calibrate my butter-o-meter before popping my Silva Friday night  I'm thinking worst case I could marinate some chicken in it and grill out Sunday. Cheers!

It seems to be very hit or miss. From what I've read, it was mostly east coast. They opened 50 bottles the other day and found no problems. They were doing the same yesterday. I take them at their word. I will send them my other bottle if that will help get to the cause of the problem

Interesting. I wonder if this could be a transportation/storage issue. First off I drink beer, I don't brew it, but it's my understanding active yeast can digest diacytel (thereby removing it from the beer). So if the beer is shipped via ground shipping, and it gets hot and kills off the active yeast, the diacytel increases. Maybe? I know my bottle made the journey from CA via ground shipping.

Had Crasher, similar thing going on but Silva was even worse, especially in the nose - loads more butter.

Any chance you could link to the image database? I searched the TTB website but wasn't able to find any images. Thanks.

So I just noticed that the picture that started this whole thread is 2014 batch 1. My bottle is brewed April 2013, bottled February 16, 2015 and is labeled 2015 batch 1. Is the picture wrong, or are there two batch #1, one in 2014 and one in 2015?

This is just an example, but you have to use the TTB COLA search engine to find the lablels (product code 900-910 are beer labels) and then once you click the link for a specific beer (like this), you have to then click on the link in the upper right hand corner that says "Printable Version". You'll get a pop-up window that lists more details about the label, scroll to the bottom to see the actual label approved.
